New Eastman School Institute Focuses on Music for Film, Contemporary Media

Students will have a range of opportunities to write, produce, and perform music for film and contemporary media as part of a new initiative at the Eastman School. That's thanks to a $2 million commitment from Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal ’85E and vocalist Joan Beal ’84E to launch the Beal Institute for Film Music and Contemporary Media. Most recently known for his critically acclaimed scores, including the ominous themes on the Netflix series House of Cards, Jeff Beal workshopped a House of Cards suite in April (above) with Eastman's student-run Empire Film Music Ensemble.

Class of 2019 Settles In

Nearly 1,300 freshmen from 47 states and 83 countries moved in to their new homes on the River Campus and at the Eastman School. See photos and a video from Move-in Day. Freshmen also participated in the annual Wilson Day and George Eastman Day community service events—see the photos.

What Would Susan B. Say?

The Susan B. Anthony Center launched a Twitter campaign aimed at connecting social media users with her opinions on an array of social issues under the hashtag #SueBSays. The campaign coincides with the 95th anniversary of the signing of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. Read more...


A Vaccine Was Born

Rochester biochemist Porter Anderson (pictured) helped develop the first vaccine for toddlers and infants that was effective against a form of bacterial meningitis. The innovation transformed pediatric medicine over the past quarter century. Read more...

Faculty Recognized with Endowed Professorships

Dirk Bohmann (second from left) was installed to the Donald M. Foster, MD Professorship in Biomedical Genetics, and Robert Strawderman (second from right) was installed as the Donald M. Foster, MD Distinguished Professor of Biostatistics at an August ceremony. They are pictured with President and CEO Joel Seligman, David Foster (brother of Donald Foster), and Medical Center CEO Mark Taubman. Cardiac surgeon Peter Knight was also installed this summer as the inaugural holder of the Marjorie B. Morris Endowed Professorship in Cardiac Surgery. Read more...


Vision Expert David Williams Honored

David Williams, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on human vision, has been named the 2015 recipient of the Beckman-Argyros Award in Vision Research. Williams, the William G. Allyn Professor of Medical Optics, pioneered the use of adaptive optics technologies for vision applications. Read more...
