{"id":836,"date":"2025-01-16T19:41:23","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T00:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/sexualmisconduct\/?page_id=836"},"modified":"2025-08-21T16:09:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T20:09:07","slug":"title-ix-explained","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/sexualmisconduct\/title-ix-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"Title IX Explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Understanding Title IX<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>What is Title IX?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (\u201cTitle IX\u201d), 20 U.S.C. \u00a71681\u00a0<em>et seq.<\/em>, is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex\u2014including pregnancy and related conditions\u2014in educational programs and activities. It states:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cNo person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance&#8230;\u201d <\/em>20 U.S.C. \u00a7 1681<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All public and private schools, school districts, colleges, and universities receiving any Federal funds (\u201cschools\u201d) must comply with Title IX. Title IX covers all the operations of a school that receives financial assistance, including academics, extracurricular activities, athletics, and other programs.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of the types of discrimination that are covered under Title IX include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sexual harassment (quid pro quo harassment, and hostile environment harassment);<\/li>\n<li>sexual assault (including rape and fondling);<\/li>\n<li>domestic violence;<\/li>\n<li>dating violence;<\/li>\n<li>stalking;<\/li>\n<li>pregnancy or related conditions discrimination (full spectrum of processes and events connected with pregnancy, including pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, or lactation; related medical conditions; and recovery therefrom);<\/li>\n<li>the failure to provide equal athletic opportunity;<\/li>\n<li>sex-based discrimination in a school\u2019s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses and programs; discriminatory application of dress code policies and\/or enforcement; and<\/li>\n<li>retaliation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Understanding Title IX What is Title IX?
