{"id":20376,"date":"2017-11-16T20:18:14","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T20:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bferrign.wdev.rochester.edu\/uhs\/?page_id=20376"},"modified":"2017-11-17T20:51:59","modified_gmt":"2017-11-17T20:51:59","slug":"academic-faculty-classroom-climate-and-prevention","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/uhs\/ucc\/referring-a-student-to-ucc\/academic-faculty-classroom-climate-and-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Faculty: Classroom Climate and Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What part do we play in UR becoming a sensitized and responsive community to distressed students?<\/p>\n<h3>As human beings, we all have&#8230;<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Unique personality and communication styles<\/li>\n<li>Particular approaches to dealing with others<\/li>\n<li>Differing needs for structure \/ flexibility<\/li>\n<li>Unique set of strengths and areas of needed growth<\/li>\n<li>Differing ability to handle conflict<\/li>\n<li>Certain biases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>As teachers, we all have&#8230;<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Expertise in out field<\/li>\n<li>A desire to educate and, perhaps, help students develop holistically<\/li>\n<li>Differing years of teaching \/ mentoring experience<\/li>\n<li>Unique classroom \/ lab management styles<\/li>\n<li>Power to influence students &#8211; wanted or not<\/li>\n<li>Differences in desire\/ interest \/ ability to work with students beyond the curriculum \/ academics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How do these characteristics blend<\/h2>\n<h3>They are the basis for how we&#8230;<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>View ourselves and others<\/li>\n<li>Create our unique classroom \/ lab environment (set a tone)<\/li>\n<li>Interact with colleagues and out students<\/li>\n<li>Problem solve situations that arise<\/li>\n<li>Are aware of and use &#8220;teachable&#8221; moments&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Model adult behavior and responsibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>At our best, we can&#8230;<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a positive (safe and stable) environment where students can learn and grow<\/li>\n<li>Enhance student learning and self-confidence<\/li>\n<li>Set and example for appropriate interactions with others<\/li>\n<li>Use &#8220;teachable&#8221; moments to model for and help student grow in responsibility and maturity<\/li>\n<li>Help students become self-advocates<\/li>\n<li>Encourage students to take responsibility for their behavior and reap the associated rewards and \/or consequences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>At our worst, we can<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a negative (unsafe\/unstable) environment<\/li>\n<li>Hamper student learning and decrease their self-confidence<\/li>\n<li>Model or create inappropriate or antagonistic interactions with others<\/li>\n<li>Incite or intensify problems rather than resolve them<\/li>\n<li>Impede students taking responsibility for and experiencing consequences of their behavior<\/li>\n<li>Blame\/shame\/humiliate students unnecessarily<\/li>\n<li>Leave colleagues open to criticism for following policies and procedures when we do not<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Prevention &#8211; what can you do?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Model and expect students to utilize good stress management skills (adequate sleep, eating health etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Offer &#8220;stress-buster mini-workshops&#8221; during high stress times of the semester (we are glad to come to your classes to provide this)<\/li>\n<li>Phase feedback positively\/constructively whenever possible<\/li>\n<li>Understand that some students lack basic &#8220;life skill&#8221; and are playing &#8220;catch up&#8221; in many developmental areas<\/li>\n<li>Create opportunities for &#8220;connections&#8217; in your classroom\/lab and work to engage the withdrawn or socially isolated students<\/li>\n<li>Encourage students with disabilities to self-identify and utilize accommodations<\/li>\n<li>Refer students to time management and study skills<\/li>\n<li>Check in with your students regularly and create a climate where it is safe for students to come to you if they are getting &#8220;overwhelmed&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Encourage use of office hours and help sessions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Intervention &#8211; What can you do?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare &#8211; set aside time to talk\n<ul>\n<li>Consider what you want to address<\/li>\n<li>Ask ourselves\n<ul>\n<li>What else might be going on for this student?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Approach the situation with a willingness to understand\/&#8221;presumed innocence&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Remind ourselves of the goal of this interaction\n<ul>\n<li>To problem solve<\/li>\n<li>To reduce negative behavior<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Privacy &#8211; Talk in private when you and the student have time and are not preoccupied\n<ul>\n<li>Give undivided attention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Honesty &#8211; Be direct with your concern and identify that which concerns you\n<ul>\n<li>Express your concerns in behavioral, non-judgmental terms\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been concerned about you lately. You seem kind of down and withdrawn. I&#8217;ve noted you&#8217;ve not been coming to class regularly, and when you do, you seem preoccupied and uninvolved. Your last paper was a C+ and you usually do A work&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Lately you&#8217;ve seemed on the edge. I notice you&#8217;re increasingly argumentative in class. I&#8217;m concerned about you.<br \/>\nVS<br \/>\n&#8220;You keep skipping class.
