Health insurance generally covers the cost of services such as hospitalization, surgery, and diagnostic laboratory tests and x-rays. The amount of coverage will depend on the insurance plan you choose. Health insurance will not cover all of your family&#8217;s health care needs. You are responsible for paying for costs not covered by your insurance plan.<\/p>\n<h2>Insurance Options for Families<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If you have a spouse\/domestic partner and no children: <\/strong>Your spouse or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/uhs\/primary-care\/mandatory-health-fee\/health-insurance-for-full-time-students\/domestic-partnership-health-insurance-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">domestic partner <\/a>can enroll in the UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna) for full-time students as long as you are registered full-time and are enrolled in the plan. The cost for health insurance for your spouse was $3,720 for the 2024-2025 academic year. The cost for health insurance for your spouse <i>remains <\/i>$3,720 the 2025-2026 academic year. Your spouse must also pay the mandatory health fee, which was $828 for the 2024-2025 academic year and will be <strong>$960 for the 2025-2026 academic year<\/strong>. The charge for the UR Student Health Insurance Plan and the mandatory health fee will be billed to your tuition billing statement. By paying the mandatory health fee for your spouse, your spouse is eligible for all primary care services at UHS. The charge for the health insurance premium for your spouse is paid when you enroll them on the plan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you have a dependent child or children under age 26: <\/strong>If you are enrolled in the UR Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna), you can enroll your dependent child(ren) in the plan. The cost for health insurance <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for one child<\/span> was $3,720 for the 2024-2025 academic year and <em>will remain<\/em> $3,720 for the 2025-2026 academic year. The cost <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">for two or more children<\/span> was $7,440 for the 2024-2025 academic year and <em>will remain<\/em> $7,440 for the 2025-2026 academic year. The mandatory health fee is not charged for dependent children since UHS does not provide services for children under age 16. The charge for the health insurance premium for dependent children will be billed to your tuition billing statement when you complete their enrollment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Affordable Care Act Insurance Exchange<\/h2>\n<p>Students with a U.S. Social Security number and history of paying taxes in their state of residence may be eligible for insurance through the US Affordable Care Act Insurance Exchange in that state. For those in New York, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/nystateofhealth.ny.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nystateofhealth.ny.gov<\/a>. For those from other states, do an internet search for the corresponding website or use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.health.gov<\/a>. Students, regardless of place of residence, who are parents of newborns should also check the insurance exchange websites for coverage options for their children. International graduates continuing in special University-sponsored programs (like OPT) in the United States should check with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iso.rochester.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Services Office (ISO)<\/a> for information about health insurance options.<\/p>\n<h2>The Online Health\u00a0Insurance Process<\/h2>\n<p>Each year every full-time student, whether new or returning, must complete the Online\u00a0 Health Insurance Process during Fall Open Enrollment (June &#8211; September 15) to select their insurance coverage for the year. The link to the Online Health Insurance Process closes at the end of the day on September 15. For more information about health insurance, check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/uhs\/primary-care\/mandatory-health-fee\/health-insurance-for-full-time-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Insurance for Full-time Students<\/a>.
