tab_id=&#8221;1596057809579-277eb000-146d&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enabling students to \u201cget\u201d the key concept\/big idea behind the specific learning activities they engaged in \u2013 \u201cto see the forest for the trees\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Enabling students to better appreciate the significance and value of what they learned<\/li>\n<li>Helping students see how they can apply what they have just learned to new problems and situations<\/li>\n<li>The ability and habit of \u201csynthesizing learning\u201d is a valuable life-long learning skill for students to acquire \u2013 so it will be worth spending some instructional time to help students develop it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Potential challenges (and how they may be reduced)&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1596057865465-56e3cc85-ebc1&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It may be difficult for students to do this synthesis work\u2013 or even understand what is expected of them:\n<ul>\n<li><em>Have the teacher model it first<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The teacher may need to facilitate and scaffold this activity \u2013 especially the first few times <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Many students may not appreciate the value of this activity:\n<ul>\n<li><em>Be explicit about why you are doing it \u2013 especially at the beginning<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Show the value by providing an opportunity to apply what was summarized in the synthesis <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It takes time to do this well:\n<ul>\n<li><em>Plan time for this in your synch sessions and\/or as part of students\u2019 independent work<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Other things to consider&#8221;
