A metaphor used to categorize the stages prospective students move through on their path to enrolling at a university. For official reporting by the Office of Institutional Research at Rochester, these stages or funnel status groups in order include: Inquiry (Admissions), applicant (Admissions), admit (Admissions), accept (Admissions) and enrolled (admissions).
A stage in the enrollment funnel where an individual has fulfilled the institution's requirements to be considered for admission. For some UR schools, submitting the admissions application without required attachments or fees still meets the threshold to be considered for admission. The applicant status may further be broken down by the following:
Funnel Status | Definition |
Application Submitted, Awaiting payment | Application has been submitted but application fee may not have been paid or waived |
Application Submitted and Paid, Submitted and Paid | Application that has been submitted and the application fee has either been paid or officially waived. |
Application Incomplete, Incomplete | Application was submitted and paid, and should be counted as an applicant, but is missing some other required element such as an audition. |
TOEFL Incomplete | Application was submitted and paid, but did not submit sufficient evidence of English language proficiency. TOEFL score could be missing, or could be too low for their desired degree program. |
Application Completed | All required elements of application have been completed and submitted, and application fee has been paid. |
Administrative Withdrawal | Applicant's application was submitted and paid, but subsequently withdrawn by Admissions. This is a rare situation, and would only happen in cases of fraud, or if we determine that the applicant does not have the pre-requisite degree. |
Cancel/Withdraw, Withdraw, Passive Withdrawal | Applicant withdraws their application after it has been submitted and paid, but before an admissions decision has been made |
Do Not Invite to Audition | Application was denied admission after a first-round review known as 'Pre-screening' |
Deny/Denied/Rejected | Applicant had been denied admission. |
Postpone | Applicant decision has been postponed |
Waitlist | Applicant placed on waitlist. Waitlisted applicants are asked to confirm their continued interest, or let us know if they no longer wish to be considered for admission (ie if they are committing elsewhere.) Applicant could subsequently be offered admission, or not. |
Waitlist/Remain on Waitlist | Applicant placed on waitlist has chosen to stay on waitlist |
Waitlist/Closeout, Waitlist Closed | Applicant was waitlisted, but no opening occurred and the applicant was never offered admission. In practice this is the same as a Deny |
Waitlist/Decline | Applicant was offered a spot on the waitlist, but was no longer interested. In practice this is the same as a Deny. |
Withdraw from Waitlist | Applicant has withdrawn their application after being put on waitlist. |
