Public Safety Review Board convenes first meeting

On Friday, Nov. 18, members of the newly established Public Safety Review Board met for the first time to hear their charge and begin their committee work to provide regular assessments of the Department of Public Safety’s practices and procedures and evaluate the implementation plan for the arming of officers in the Medical Center.  The Public Safety Review Board will meet throughout the year and annually will prepare a report on its principal findings and recommendations. University Trustee Francis L. Price ’74, ’75S (MBA) is the Public Safety Review Board’s inaugural chair.

“The Public Review Safety Board met for a brief initial session on Friday, with the focus on establishing ‘rules of the road’ that will influence process, methods and structure,” said Price. “We look forward to delving into the issues presented to us and communicating to the University at large.”

Implementing a Public Safety Review Board was part of President and CEO Joel Seligman’s Oct. 13 response to the recommendations of the Security Commission Report, which was a five-year review of Public Safety’s role in campus safety efforts. Seligman noted in his Oct. 13 response that all of the University’s Public Safety officers and staff are committed professionals dedicated to our community, but that it is important nonetheless to have additional accountability measures, similar to those implemented at peer institutions.  The Review Board will meet with or receive reports from the Department of Public Safety and all other relevant parties as necessary to effectively perform its work.
