The Willow Center’s Purple Box campaign launches this time each year in recognition of national Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The annual event where many participants wear high heels and fun shoes during a one-mile walk around Ontario Beach Park benefits the Willow Domestic Violence Center. The “Walk A Mile in My Shoes” event coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

The University’s annual security and fire safety compliance document, Think Safe, is available on the Department of Public Safety’s website. Think Safe contains crime statistics for crimes reported on campus for the three previous calendar years.

The newest class of non-sworn officers includes individuals proficient in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Patois, and have joined Public Safety from a wide range of professional backgrounds.

A local woman, Heidi Bai, was awarded a commendation for her life-saving efforts on a cold winter night in February.

A review of the 2011 Security Commission Report—which called for the implementation of a mixed system of both sworn peace officers and nonsworn officers and resulted in the renaming of University Security to the Department of Public Safety, among other recommendations—is under way.

This is the first year that Public Safety is participating in the Willow Domestic Violence Center’s annual Purple Box campaign to collect new holiday gifts for over 300 children in crisis.

The DPS website and Think Safe contain information regarding campus security and personal safety, including crime prevention, fire safety, University police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, and disciplinary procedures.

The University’s Department of Public Safety is offering the main lobby of its headquarters as a “safe zone” for Craigslist and other online transactions.
