Gloria Culver reappointed Dean of School of Arts & Sciences

Serving as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences since 2015, Gloria Culver has been reappointed to a new five-year term. The Board of Trustees approved Culver’s deanship renewal at its May meeting.

Defining the future of the School of Arts & Sciences

Gloria Culver was formally installed as dean of the School of Arts & Sciences during an investiture ceremony December 1 in the Interfaith Chapel. A professor of biology, Culver joined the Rochester faculty in 2007. During the ceremony, Culver talked about defining the School of Arts & Sciences—and charting its future.

University to introduce Institute for Performing Arts

The institute will serve as a center for performance programs on the River Campus, aiming to further inspire students with or without prior training or experience to explore a variety of aesthetic art forms and opportunities. The institute will strengthen the relationships among the College, the Eastman School of Music, and the Memorial Art Gallery.

Targeting cells’ protein-making machinery may stop harmful bacteria

For the first time, the middle-steps in the process that creates the protein-making machinery of bacterial cells—called the ribosomes—has been isolated. A new study by biologist Gloria Culver suggests that blocking these pathways may help kill off drug-resistant bacteria.
