MAY '37 RECEIVES HUTCHISON MEDALWilliam May '37, chairman and chief executive officer of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, received the Charles Force Hutchison and Marjorie Smith Hutchison Medal during the 150th Commencement in May. The award, Rochester's highest alumni honor, is presented annually to recognize outstanding professional achievements and notable service to community, state, or nation. May joined the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation as president in 1984 and was named chairman in 1986. Since that time, the 12-acre park has undergone a $200 million restoration, crowned by the renovation of the 151-foot statue of Lady Liberty. The work has been funded entirely through private donations made to the foundation. May's 42-year career with American Can Company included 15 years of successful leadership as chairman and chief executive officer. He also served as dean of the business administration faculty and dean of the graduate school of business administration at New York University. Since 1965, he has served as a member of the University's Board of Trustees, most recently as a Life Trustee.
