April 2018: Celebrating scholarships, honoring Martin Luther King, and the presidential search.

Immensely Thankful

In 2017-18, grant and scholarship aid was awarded to 86 percent of University of Rochester undergraduates. On April 14, scholarship recipients, and the donors whose contributions help support them, will gather near campus to celebrate the incredible difference scholarships make for students of all backgrounds. Meet extraordinary scholarship recipients like Yareni Sime ’18, read excerpts from students’ personal letters to donors, and find out why they chose Rochester at everbetter.rochester.edu.

Honoring Martin Luther King

Fifty years ago, students at the University of Rochester reacted to the news of Martin Luther King’s assassination with emotion, but also a determination to continue his push for racial equality. They led a march from the Eastman Quadrangle into the city of Rochester to attend a memorial service for King at the Civic Center plaza, and, just two days following King’s death, Rochester students announced the formation of the Black Students’ Union.

That same week in 1968, Paul Burgett ’68E, ’72E (MA), ‘76E (PhD)–then a senior at the Eastman School of Music–delivered a 12-minute speech commemorating King’s fight for social justice.  Listen to his speech »

New Committee to Lead Search for University’s Next President

The Board of Trustees has established a Presidential Search Committee, cochaired by University Trustee Cathy Minehan ’68, and Danny Wegman, chair of the Board of Trustees. The committee will work with three advisory committees: the University Advisory Committee, consisting largely of faculty; the Staff Advisory Committee; and the Student Advisory Committee. Names of committee members are listed on the new Presidential Search website, which will be updated regularly and include information on the position itself, the search process, timelines, and other activities related to the search. The University community is also invited to submit suggestions, questions, and nominations in confidence to the search committee.
