“I had emergency surgery during the academic year which caused me to miss over a month of work at my job and left me with a hefty medical bill I couldn’t afford. The Basic Needs Hub covered my medical bill which allowed me to focus on my schoolwork during my challenging recovery. As a low-income student, I am especially grateful for the support because I had nowhere else to turn.”

More information on the Student Emergency Fund:

The Student Emergency Fund provides emergency financial assistance to students in any situation where there is a demonstrated need, providing support for things such as an emergency flight home, unforeseen medical expenses, clothing needs, academic tools (laptop or books), and more.

About the Comfy for a Cause campaign:

The ‘Comfy for a Cause’ campaign first launched in the fall of 2019 to support the newly established Student Emergency Fund, aimed at providing critical financial assistance to students in need. Little did we anticipate how crucial this fund would become when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020. The $2,300 raised during the inaugural campaign was quickly put to use, offering immediate relief to students facing unexpected challenges such as medical expenses, emergency housing, and travel costs for returning home.

Since 2020, the Basic Needs Hub on the River Campus has received over 550 emergency assistance requests annually from students, highlighting the growing need for support and the importance of replenishing the funds in real-time. Thanks to the generosity of the University of Rochester community, the ‘Comfy for a Cause’ campaign has now raised over $40,000 since its inception, directly benefiting students through the Student Emergency Fund.
