Recently, a series of phishing and social engineering attacks have targeted organizations, including healthcare establishments. Unlike phishing attacks, which are deceptive emails, messages, or websites that appear legitimate to steal your sensitive information, social engineering involves gaining the trust of an individual via phone, chats, or messaging so that they unwittingly divulge confidential information.
The Information Security Office wants to remind the University community to stay vigilant and offers a list of ways to be proactive in safeguarding personal and professional information, including being cautious with links, using strong passwords, and being skeptical of unsolicited requests. Review the list to make sure you’re following best practices.
If you receive a suspicious email or message, report it immediately to the University IT Help Desk at (585) 275-2000, the ISD Service Desk at (585) 275-3200, or forward the email as an attachment to abuse@rochester.edu.
University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, April 15, for Rachel Schmidt, a safety and compliance rep IV in the University Facilities and Services Medical Center Operations Department, who died on March 16. Schmidt joined the University staff in 2024.
“For a war to end, at least one of the parties must change their war aims,” says Hein Goemans, a professor of political science. Following an initial reassessment when its blitzkrieg failed to take Kyiv and topple Zelensky, “Russia hasn’t really changed its war aims.”

Drop-in advising event
The College Center for Advising Services is holding a drop-in advising event on Wednesday, April 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hirst Lounge for undergraduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. Advisors, departments, and peer advisors will be present to chat with students about registration, major declaration, and general advising.
Explore the University campus through the lens of mindfulness and well-being on a guided wellness tour from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 11. Specifically designed to highlight spaces dedicated to relaxation, movement, spiritual reflection, and holistic wellness, the tour will also contain a discussion of how these spaces support mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Reserve a spot today.
You can also stop by Wilson Quad on April 11 from noon to 2 p.m. to enjoy cuisine from the Eat Greek food truck. Open to all students, faculty, and staff, the truck accepts cash and cards.
These events are part of the Flourish Festival. Students who attend four events will be entered into one of three wellness giveaways.
Apply to be a summer graduate teaching assistant coach
Build leadership skills, learn more about teaching, and orient new graduate teaching assistants while earning a stipend this summer. Open to experienced graduate teaching assistants in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, this program trains experienced graduate teaching assistants during the summer to coach and train first-time graduate teaching assistants during graduate teaching assistant orientation on August 20. Health Care Leadership Development Program information session
Designed for Medical Center physicians, the Health Care Leadership Development Program offers a unique opportunity to sharpen your business acumen and strengthen your healthcare management skills, without the commitment of a full graduate degree program. The program’s targeted curriculum is taught by Simon Business School faculty. Medical Center faculty and staff with an advanced degree are encouraged to apply for the spring cohort. Admission priority is given to Medical Center leaders who plan to pursue all four modules. Apply early; cohort size is limited.

Celebrating Research Week continues on Wednesday, April 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Feldman Ballroom, with undergraduate research lightning talks. The event is open to all and presented by the Office of Undergraduate Research in partnership with the Journal of Undergraduate Research, ROCTalks, and Project Level The Field. Prizes will be awarded for Best Talk and People’s Choice. Free pizza will be provided.
