Updates, support, and resources for our international community

In a message sent yesterday to the University community, President Sarah Mangelsdorf and Provost Nicole Sampson shared that the University is taking immediate action to support its international students and scholars who have begun facing actions by federal authorities—including the revocation of visas and other legal statuses of some students and recent graduates. The University is committed to helping students, faculty, and staff navigate the uncertainty caused by the new immigration enforcement, working to help provide resources like FAQs regarding US Immigration Enforcement to affected individuals as well as to those who are anxious about their immigration status.

Recovery testing on University web server

From 10 p.m. on Friday, April 11, to 1 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, the main University web server that hosts several sites, including www.rochester.edu and tech.rochester.edu, will undergo regular disaster recovery testing. During this window, some sites may be unavailable for up to 30 minutes. Contact UnivITWebServices@ur.rochester.edu with questions.

The great brain clearance and dementia debate

Nature, April 9

Scientists have known about a link between poor sleep and an increased risk of dementia for decades. Maiken Nedergaard, codirector of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, says that people who report six hours or less of sleep a night are more likely to develop dementia later. “Sleep disturbances very often precede the first sign of dementia by many years.”

Spring LGBTQ leadership lecture

The Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center invites all undergraduate and graduate students to the spring 2025 Lorri L. Jean and Darrel Cummings LGBTQ Leadership Lecture featuring Aaron Morris, executive director of Immigration Equality. The event takes place on Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. Dinner from Salena’s Mexican Restaurant will be served. Learn more about the speaker and register here by April 17.

Become a Meliora Weekend student volunteer

Get involved on campus and connect with alumni during Meliora Weekend, September 18–21. Simon launches graduate certificates in healthcare management

Designed for clinical and non-clinical healthcare professionals, Simon Business School’s new graduate certificates in healthcare management provide a focused way to build expertise in leadership, finance, strategy and marketing, or analytics and AI, in a streamlined format tailored to working professionals—with the option to build toward a master’s in medical management (MMM).

Each graduate certificate program includes three courses curated from Simon’s MMM program. Certificate participants attend class and network with MMM students. Credits earned in up to two certificates may be stacked toward the completion of the MMM degree program. Credits may also be applied toward Simon’s Professional MBA or Executive MBA programs.

Graduate certificates in healthcare financeleadership, and strategy and marketing will begin in fall 2025, and the application is open. Simon’s Health Care Analytics and AI certificate will begin in spring 2026; the application will open this fall.

Eastman @ Washington Square presents the Ying Quartet

Experience the Ying Quartet, quartet-in-residence at the Eastman School of Music, as they perform Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet today, April 10, at 12:15 p.m. at the First Universalist Church of Rochester. This will be the 22nd performance of the Eastman @ Washington Square lunchtime concert series. The performance is free and open to the public.

LiDA colloquium on developing and using AI-powered course virtual assistants

The next Center for Learning in the Digital Age (LiDA) colloquium session will feature people engaged in both the development and pilot of URCourseBot, an exploration of possible applications for virtual assistants, and potential implications for student and teacher practices. Learn more and register to attend via Zoom today, April 10, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Attend Friday’s Undergraduate Research Expo

Celebrating Research Week concludes Friday, April 11, with the Research Poster Expo in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons, from 1 to 3 p.m. The University-wide event showcases Rochester undergraduate students at all levels and in all areas of study presenting their investigative and creative work. An awards ceremony will immediately follow to recognize the best posters and best symposium speakers from last week’s Research Symposium. All are welcome to attend.

Annual economics lecture focuses on inflation

John Cochrane, the Rose-Marie and Jack Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, gives the annual Lionel W. McKenzie Lecture, hosted by the Department of Economics, on Thursday, April 17, from 4:50 to 6 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400. Learn more about the McKenzie Lecture Series.
