Paul Sotoudeh named University ombuds

Paul Sotoudeh, ombuds.

Paul Sotoudeh ’95 has been appointed as ombuds effective September 15. In this role, Sotoudeh will lead the Ombuds Office, which serves as an impartial, confidential, and informal resource for all faculty, staff, and students across the University.

AlertUR test tonight at 6 p.m.

The fall semester test of AlertUR takes place today, September 4, at 6 p.m. AlertUR is the University’s emergency notification system, including the Medical Center. In the event of an emergency, alerts are sent by voice, text, and email message. The purpose of the twice-a-year test is to activate the AlertUR system and check that you can be reached immediately. Workshop on staying healthy in a new environment

Whether you are new to the United States or just to the University, join the Health Promotion Office and International Services Office to learn about health and lifestyle resources in the area and set your own personal health goals in this interactive workshop sponsored by the International Services Office and Health Promotion Office. Register to attend on Friday, September 5, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Developing your job and internship search strategy in the US

Join the Greene Center on Friday, September 5, at 1 p.m. in Dewey Hall, Room 2-162, for the first of a three-part series designed specifically for students who are looking to navigate the internship and job market in the United States. Session topics will include what services the Greene Center has to offer, how to build competencies while at Rochester, how to prepare for internship and job searches along with US work culture and norms, and what to know about your work authorization status. Turn pressure into productivity

This week’s UR Medicine EAP blog post offers five tips to help you turn pressure into productivity. UR Medicine EAP is brought to you by Well-U, helping eligible individuals assess issues through short-term counseling and referrals.

Control your asthma triggers

Rochester ranks as the second most challenging city to live in for asthma conditions. As peak allergy season approaches, learn how to avoid and cope with asthma flare-ups by meeting with a coach from Well-U’s condition management team. Get started here.

School of Nursing open house

Attend a School of Nursing open house on Monday, September 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. to connect with faculty and admissions staff, learn about flexible program options to fit your lifestyle and goals, and discover scholarship and grant opportunities, including full tuition coverage for University employees. Register to attend.

Tuition waiver benefit reminder

If you are an employee attending classes at the University, you must submit the employee tuition waiver application to the Office of Total Rewards within 30 days of the start of your course. Apply online by logging into myURHR Workday, clicking on “Benefits and Pay” on the homepage under Apps, and then selecting “Employee Tuition Waiver Application” under Suggested Links. Before submitting, double-check that you have selected the correct supervisor and answered any taxation questions. Once you submit the application online, you cannot go back and make any changes.

On-site retirement planning sessions

The University now offers MMA Prosper Wise, a new retirement planning tool that adds to the financial resources available through the University retirement program. This fall, a financial coach will visit University locations to offer one-on-one sessions, making it easy and convenient to get personalized support for your retirement goals. Register for your session at Corporate Woods, the Medical Center, or the River Campus.


FOR THE COMMUNITY

Join a Calming U mindfulness class

Through guided meditation, reflective exercises, and meaningful discussion, the Mindful University Project’s Calming U four-week course builds resilience, deepens self-awareness, and cultivates a calmer, more focused mindset to navigate academic, work, and personal challenges. Sessions are designed for the University community and are held on Tuesdays, September 9, 16, 23, and 30 from 4 to 5:15 p.m. in Douglass Commons, Room 401. Students who attend all four sessions will receive their choice of a self-compassion workbook, yoga mat, or meditation cushion. Space is limited; join today.

Wilmot Shared Resources lunch and learn seminar

Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Biobank Shared Resource hosts its “Viable Tissue Processing, Preservation, and Modeling” lunch and learn seminar on Tuesday, September 9, in the K-307 Auditorium, Medical Center. All students, staff, postdocs, and PIs are encouraged to attend. Lunches will be provided. You can register here.

Data Bloom data visualization workshops

Join the University Libraries for Data Bloom, a series of data visualization workshops capped with a contest. Fall Restorative Dialogues sessions

The Office of University Engagement and Enrichment and the Susan B. Anthony Center offer the fall semester’s Restorative Dialogues series, open to all University students, staff, and faculty. Celebration of Women in Jazz at Eastman
