Professor Emeritus Daniel Beaumont remembered

Daniel Beaumont, a professor emeritus in the Department of Religion and Classics, is being remembered for his intellectual curiosity, insatiable creativity, and passionate teaching across seemingly disparate fields. Beaumont, who joined the University faculty in 1992, died on August 6. University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, September 30.

Free screenings of Mickey 17

The SAB Cinema Group and Department of English will present screenings of the 2025 film Mickey 17 on Friday, September 12, at 6:30 and 9 p.m. in Hoyt Hall Auditorium. The film is based on the sci-fi novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton ’96 (PhD), who will return to Rochester in October for the Neilly Author Series Lecture. Screenings are free and open to all students. What’s the deal with UFOs?

Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, doesn’t put much stock in UFO videos, and he told a story to explain why. In February 2023, photographs of a Chinese spy balloon over Billings, Montana, prompted speculation about aliens. The Air Force eventually shot it down, but first, the pilot of an American U-2 spy plane flew past and took a selfie that showed the balloon out the window. “You can see it in exquisite detail,” says Frank. “Where are all those pictures? Every UFO picture is a fuzzy blob. Everybody carries a high-resolution camera in their pocket now, and it’s always fuzzy blobs.”
