Alumni Joan and Jeff Beal make record gift to the Eastman School of Music
Vocalist, music and education champion, and University Trustee Joan Beal ’84E and Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal ’85E have made a historic, multimillion-dollar gift to the Eastman School of Music. The gift—made by the alumni as part of For Ever Better: The Campaign for the University of Rochester—supports the intersection of music, technology, and education. It is also the largest individual gift made to the school since George Eastman established it in 1921. Read more here.

The Writing and Speaking Center open for the semester
Writing fellows, writing consultants, and speaking fellows are now available for appointments and drop-in sessions. The Writing and Speaking Center also offers a full range of tutoring services for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. Apply for Take Five and e5 programs
The fall 2025 application cycles for Take Five and e5 programs are now open. For the Take Five Scholars Program, a program recommender form must be submitted by Friday, October 10, at 5 p.m. to stay eligible to apply during the semester. The final deadline for both applications is Sunday, November 2, at 11:59 p.m., when all materials and both recommendation letters must be submitted through their respective portals. Get involved in undergraduate research
Looking for research opportunities? Not sure how to get started? The Office of Undergraduate Research will host an information session with a student panel of Research Ambassadors who are currently doing research. Ask questions about getting started in research at the University and learn their best advice. All class years and majors are welcome. Attend Red Watch Band training

Submit abstracts to the Scientific Abstract Competition
The Wilmot Cancer Institute invites University students, trainees, and faculty to submit abstracts for the 2025 Scientific Abstract Competition. One abstract from each of five categories will be selected for oral presentation; other submissions will be featured in a scientific poster competition at Wilmot’s 30th Annual Scientific Symposium on November 6.
