Leadership message on impact of government shutdown

Yesterday, University leaders shared a message on what the government shutdown means for Rochester as an institution and as a community, noting that they are working with the Congressional delegation, agency sponsors, and national associations to monitor and assess the situation. IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Robert Gauldin

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, October 16, for Robert Gauldin, a professor emeritus of music theory at the Eastman School of Music, who died on September 14. Gauldin joined the University faculty in 1963.

Graduate Writing Project writing workshop

Graduate students and postdocs in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences are invited to a workshop on writing like an expert in your discipline. Participants will practice rhetorical genre analysis, examining how academic writers use language to frame arguments, review prior research, and describe methods. Attendees are encouraged to bring sample papers from their field for in-session analysis. Register to attend on Wednesday, October 8, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Conference Room B (G-121), Rush Rhees Library.

Schwartz Discover Grant Scholars showcase

Join the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Schwartz Discover Grant Scholars as they present research posters from a broad range of disciplines and majors. These posters represent over 25,000 hours of research experience by eighty-three grant recipients who conducted research with University mentors this past summer. Open to all members of the University community on Friday, October 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons.

Lecture on artist Helen Huntington Hooker O’Malley

Cormac O’Malley, an Irish-American author and historian, gives a talk about artist Helen Huntington Hooker O’Malley on Monday, October 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation, Rush Rhees Library. The talk is in conjunction with the exhibit Helen Hooker O’Malley and the Generations that Made Her, on display through December 12.
