New imaging technology could buy time for pancreatic cancer patients
Marvin Doyley, right, professor and chair of electrical and computer engineering, and PhD students Irteza (Enan) Kabir, left, and Reem Mislati are part of a team of Rochester engineers, imaging scientists, surgeons, and immunologists working together on a novel imaging technology for pancreatic cancer tumors. The technology would help surgeons make the most of a narrow time frame before the cancer spreads to try to treat the tumors, shrinking them enough to safely remove them.

Gaelen McCormick, an instructor of arts leadership at the Eastman School of Music and program manager of Eastman Performing Arts Medicine, will serve as president-elect of the International Society of Bassistsfrom 2023–25. She will be the third woman in the organization’s history to serve as president.
Jonathan Mink, the Frederick A. Horner MD Distinguished Professor in Pediatric Neurology and chief of child neurology, has been awarded the Child Neurology Society’s 2021 Hower Award. The award is the organization’s highest honor and is given annually to a child neurologist recognized as an outstanding teacher, scholar, and for making high levels of contributions to the field and to the society.

Dance concert showcases the interplay of lights, music, and action in a brand-new space
On November 6 and 7, the Program of Dance and Movement presented Confluence—its annual fall concert of multidisciplinary work and collaborations between faculty and students in choreography, lighting, and costume design. The concert was the first event to take place inside the 200-seat black box theater at the new Sloan Performing Arts Center. New Dean's Lectureship Series highlighting Medical Center, international experts
Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor in the Department of Biology and codirector of the Rochester Aging Research Center, will give the inaugural lecture of the Medical Center’s newly established Dean’s Lectureship Series. The lectures will provide University faculty, students, and staff the chance to hear from both international experts and the best that the School of Medicine and Dentistry has to offer on a broad range of topics. Gorbunova’s talk, “Mechanisms of Longevity: Lessons from Long-Lived Mammals,” takes place Monday, December 6, at 4 p.m. in the Class of ’62 Auditorium (G-9425), Medical Center. Congratulations to the Women’s and the Open Ultimate Frisbee Teams, who both won the Metro East Championship this week and are both headed to the 2021 College Championship Series in December.
