President Sarah Mangelsdorf and Provost-designate David Figlio have announced that effective July 1, 2022, A. Joan Saab (pictured), the Susan B. Anthony Professor of Art History and Visual and Cultural Studies, and currently executive vice provost for academic affairs, will concurrently serve as interim dean of the faculty in Arts, Sciences & Engineering.
A search for a permanent dean of the faculty will not be undertaken at this time. Instead, together with Arts & Sciences Dean Gloria Culver and Hajim School Dean Wendi Heinzelman, Figlio and Saab will undertake a strategic assessment of the operations and financial structures of AS&E in the coming academic year.
Mangelsdorf remarked, “The departure of Donald Hall, currently the Robert L. and Mary L. Sproull Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Sciences & Engineering, who is to become Provost at SUNY Binghamton presents us with a unique opportunity to take stock and to imagine what we might do to strengthen and streamline AS&E operations within the context of our broader One University strategic planning.”
Figlio added, “Over the past few months, I’ve learned so much about the remarkable scholarly and creative work in AS&E. Our goal is to identify and create the mechanisms for our outstanding faculty, staff, and students to achieve their objectives. Joan, Gloria, and Wendi are the ideal partners to work with me alongside AS&E faculty and staff to develop a strategic, sustainable vision for these schools that will position them for future success.”

Whether it’s University-owned or personal electronics, you can securely recycle digital devices free of charge through the IT Equipment Recovery Program. The UR Tech Store provides a list of equipment eligible for recycling and different recycling options. When ready, you can either request a pickup or drop off electronics at the UR Tech Store’s Medical Center location, Room G-7220B.
“Here’s the thing about the multiverse: it makes a great story…but at this point, there is zero evidence,” says Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor of Physics and Astronomy. “I don’t mind if my science fiction plays with ideas that are kind of fringey or even wrong. Their job is to tell me a good story,” says Frank. Scientists, on the other hand, need proof—which, he says, they don’t currently have for the existence of the multiverse. “It is so far away from any part of science that is experimentally validated.”
Apply to the Institutional Office of Equity and Inclusion’s Research Equity Fund Program
The Institutional Office of Equity and Inclusion is providing short-term and immediate funding to support faculty research through the Research Equity Fund Program. During spring and summer 2022, the program will support full-time University faculty for research activities disrupted by COVID-19 through research funding for clinical or instructional faculty engaged in research activities, or for tenure-line faculty who did not have research funds during 2021–22.
Awards will be for up to $5,000 to cover any costs associated with research between June 1 and August 31, 2022, including childcare; travel costs; equipment; software; transcription or editing services; statistical, consulting, or data management or analysis support; or publishing fees.
