How do magnetic fields affect star formation and high-energy-density lab experiments?
With funding from a National Science Foundation grant, Rochester researchers led by Hussein Aluie, an associate professor of mechanical engineering, Riccardo Betti, the Robert L. McCrory Professor and chief scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), and Fernando Garcia-Rubio, an assistant scientist at the LLE and in Aluie’s Turbulence and Complex Flow Group, hope to explain how magnetic fields occur in plasma instabilities.

David Primo, the Ani and Mark Gabrellian Professor and a professor of political science and business administration, says his research and other studies have found limited impact on trust in government and policy outcomes. “Citizens United created more opportunities for corporations, unions, and individuals to spend money on elections, in part by paving the way for the creation of so-called ‘super PACs,’” says Primo. “Some studies have found evidence that Citizens United shifted election outcomes, but the effects have been nowhere near as dramatic as predicted by reformers.”

“Black Feminism Unfinished” is the fall 2022 symposium for the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African American Studies. This conference will explore cutting-edge research at the crosssections of race, gender, and sexuality, recognizing that there is unfinished business for scholars who employ a Black feminist lens to analyze Black life. The symposium takes place Friday, September 23, in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Register to attend.
Steadman Awards postdoctoral presentations for interdisciplinary research
The Steadman Family Postdoctoral Associate Prize in Interdisciplinary Research provides a monetary award for recognizing outstanding postdoctoral associates or postdoctoral fellows at Rochester, whose high-impact research exemplifies the importance of a cross-discipline approach. The competition is open to all University postdoctoral associates and fellows, and the University community is invited to the final presentations, held on Friday, September 23, at 4 p.m., with a reception to follow in Munnerlyn Atrium, Georgen Hall. Direct questions to asegepa@rochester.edu.
Join Kyle Trenshaw, assistant director for STEM education at the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and Buddhist chaplain at the Interfaith Chapel, for “Koru OUTBreath Edition for LGBTQ+ Folks,” beginning Mondays October 3 through October 24 at 7 p.m. EDT via Zoom. This course will teach strategies for fostering mindful resilience among a shared community and guide you to build the habit of using it in your daily life.
This class is intended for University staff, faculty, and students who hold minoritized identities of sexuality and gender (MIoSG), commonly referred to as LGBTQ+. There will be no adjustments to the course content, just the added sense of belonging that everyone in the space is a part of the MIoSG community (or a supportive ally). Registration is required to reserve your spot.
Masking when around other people indoors is strongly encouraged, especially for those who are at increased risk of severe illness if they become infected. Patient care areas, as well as University shuttles and transportation, continue to require masking. A full description of Medical Center masking requirements is available on the URMC Intranet (University network access required).
