The Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs Office announces the 2023 Edward Peck Curtis Awards for graduate student teaching, given to a small number of full-time graduate students who have a role in undergraduate education. Recipients have assisted in undergraduate instruction, and have had significant face-to-face interactions with undergraduates in the classroom or laboratory. Meet the recipients.

The Health Promotion Office is hosting its inaugural Flourish Festival today, April 14, beginning at 10 a.m. Take a study break to fill up your cup before finals season with a variety of offerings, including mindfulness and yoga sessions, virtual reality mindfulness at the Wellness Oasis, and a mindful outdoor walk. You can also get a mental health screening and learn about mindful eating. Many events will have free stress-relieving giveaways such as fidget toys, calm strips, and self-affirmation jars. Walking tour with the Neighborhood Ambassadors
The Off-Campus Living Program will host a neighborhood walking tour with the Neighborhood Ambassadors today, April 14. Get to know more about the neighborhoods where you may choose to live off campus and learn about the historical significance of the 19th Ward and PLEX neighborhoods. Meet on the sidewalk between Gilbert and Tiernan Halls at 3:45 p.m. The tour takes place from 4 to 5 p.m. Snacks and drinks are provided.
Virtual and augmented reality cross-training fellowships for doctoral graduate students
The University’s PhD training program on Virtual and Augmented Reality is looking for PhD candidates in the fields of biomedical engineering, brain and cognitive sciences, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, neuroscience, or optics who desire cross-training experience to pair with their existing studies.
Apply for the paid fellowship by July 25. (The funded fellowships can be offered to US citizens and permanent residents only.) Apply by August 15 for the general trainee program.
The University has selected LabArchives as the institution-wide, electronic lab notebook solution. All four LabArchives products are available to Rochester researchers free of charge and can be used to manage both research labs and laboratory classes. TRANSFORM Summer Research Institute on preventing child abuse and neglect
The TRANSFORM Research Center is now accepting applications for their 2023 Summer Research Institute on preventing child abuse and neglect from teams who are passionate about the topic and engaging with their local, state, and national partners. The four-day immersive program provides a supportive and creative space for junior faculty to nurture their community partnerships and prepare them as the next generation of transdisciplinary researchers. Drop by the MK Gandhi Institute’s community garden any time between 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturdays beginning April 15 to help plant, tend, and harvest food and flowers with the institute’s neighbors. Volunteers are also needed to help pack and deliver grocery bags to neighbors. Wear casual clothes and closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Tools and gloves will be provided. Language Center short film festival
The Language Center hosts its annual “Short Film Festival: Flicks Odyssey” on Saturday, April 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Language Center, Douglass Commons. The festival includes a wide range of short films in a variety of languages that are offered on campus. Complimentary snacks and the chance to win a movie-themed gift basket will be available.

Eastman presents Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony
On Friday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre the Eastman Philharmonia and Eastman-Rochester Chorus—now in its 40th season—will present Ralph Vaughan Williams’ grand first symphony, A Sea Symphony, a choral symphony set to poems by Walt Whitman. The event is free and open to the public.
Registration open for first-ever Wilmot Warrior Weekend
Registration is now open for the 2023 Wilmot Warrior Weekend from September 29 to October 1. The event will feature Wilmot Cancer Institute’s inaugural Breakaway Ride—its first-ever cycling event—on Saturday, September 30, and the 11th Annual Wilmot Warrior Walk and 5K Race on Sunday, October 1. Funds raised at this event support cancer research and survivorship care at Wilmot. Learn more and start a team.
