SECURITY TIP

FBI warns consumers about ‘juice-jacking’

Have you ever been out in public only to realize your phone has lost its charge? You may be tempted to take advantage of the public phone charging stations you see at an airport or mall, but this could put you at risk for “juice-jacking.” The FBI warns that bad actors are corrupting the USB ports as a way to introduce malware and monitoring software onto your devices. University IT advises you to make a habit of carrying your own charging cord and using an electrical outlet instead. Most importantly, always be sure your phone is running on the most recent software update.

THIS WEEK IN UNIVERSITY HISTORY

The first singing of ‘The Genesee’ along the Genesee

1924: On June 14, Rochester graduates gathered for Alumni Day at Oak Hill Country Club, the recently announced site of what would eventually become the River Campus. The day of activities closed with the crowd singing “The Genesee,” the University’s Alma Mater, by T.T. Swinburne, Class of 1892. As Hugh Smith, Class of 1907, wrote in the Rochester Alumni Review: “As the lights gleamed in reflection from the bosom of the Genesee itself, they sang Tom Swinburne’s beloved verses as they were never sung before. It was a wonderful curtain on a wonderful day.”
