Plasma oscillations propel breakthroughs in fusion energy

Together with colleagues at the University of California, San Diego, Rochester researchers have discovered a new class of plasma oscillations—the back-and-forth, wave-like movement of electrons and ions. The findings have implications for improving the performance of miniature particle accelerators and the reactors used to create fusion energy.

Learn about teacher residency programs offered through the Warner School

Discover opportunities offered by the Warner School of Education and Human Development’s 15-month master’s degree and initial certification programs at a virtual information session from 4 to 5 p.m. on Monday, March 18. Benefit from a grant-funded tuition scholarship and a year-long paid teacher residency in partner school districts. Begin your degree programs in May 2024, culminating in the completion of your master’s degree and initial certification by fall 2025 for a transition into full-time teaching. Meet program leaders from the Warner School who will provide comprehensive details about the ROC Urban Teaching Fellows Program and Monroe Regional Teacher Residency Consortium, answer your questions, and offer support in the application process. Learn more and register to attend.

Narcan training and harm reduction workshop

In this session, peer advocates from Strong Recovery will teach participants to administer Narcan in the event of a suspected opioid overdose. Participants will learn from Danielle D’Onofrio, the assistant director of Alcohol and Other Drug Education, about safer alcohol and cannabis use practices. The session will concentrate on risk reduction and how students can navigate obstacles to using these strategies. This workshop will be held as a part of the Flourish Festival, hosted by the Health Promotion Office, on March 22 in the Gowen Room from 1 to 2 p.m. Register on CCC to save your spot.

Deadline extended for TL1 Population Health Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

This one-year NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship program aims to produce interdisciplinary researchers trained in team science and competency-based skills who can conceptualize research across the translational continuum from basic research through population health. Postdocs develop and complete a population health research project within an existing research program and participate in didactic and hands-on training experiences. Applications are now due by Friday, March 22.

Poetry reading by Thomas Lynch

Attend a reading by Thomas Lynch from his book of poetry, Bone Rosary, on Monday, March 11, at 5 p.m. in the Ryan Case Method Room (1-9576), School of Medicine and Dentistry. A Q&A will follow at 6 p.m. This event is part of the year-long series on grief hosted by the Paul M. Schyve, MD Center for Bioethics and the Humanities Center.

Saward-Berg Lecture on the state of health policy

Attend this year’s Saward-Berg Lecture, “A Decade in Review: Health Policy Advances, Challenges, and Current Research Needs,” presented by Andre Chappel, director of the public health services division for the Office of Health Policy in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation in the US Department of Health and Human Services. The lecture takes place Friday, March 15, in Helen Wood Hall auditorium from 11 a.m. to noon. If interested in attending virtually, you must register to receive a Zoom link. A light lunch will follow the lecture. Registration is required.

‘Accelerate’ with the School of Medicine and Dentistry

Skip the application fee and meet onsite with faculty at this admissions event for college seniors and graduates interested in pursuing a master’s or advanced certificate program with the School of Medicine and Dentistry starting in fall 2024. The event takes place Tuesday, March 26, at 4 p.m. Registration requests a resume and transcript and serves as an accelerated application pathway.

Apply for the community-based Participatory Research Pathway to Pilot Awards

This grant provides up to $15,000 for academic and community partners who completed or intend to complete the Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s “Introduction to Community-Based Participatory Research” training, or who have demonstrated experience in the community-based research pathway. Research teams must consist of one faculty member, staff member, or trainee from the University and at least one community partner from the Greater Rochester area. The focus of the application should be on a planning grant or a pilot research project leading to a Clinical and Translational Science Institute pilot funding application or independent external funding. Apply by April 24.

Adult chamber music workshop

Join Summer @ Eastman July 26–28 for the adult chamber music workshop. Experience rehearsals, daily coaching by professional musicians, and a chamber music masterclass with cellist Matthew Zalkind. The weekend concludes with an optional recital in Eastman School’s Hatch Recital Hall. There are still openings for violin, viola, and cello players that are intermediate to advanced levels. Pre-formed chamber music groups are welcome to apply.
