New cancer-related fatigue treatment guidelines urge exercise, talk therapy, mindfulness, and tai chi

A new set of national guidelines for easing fatigue in cancer patients concludes that doctors should recommend exercise, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based programs, tai chi, qigong, and American ginseng to reduce fatigue severity during treatment. Karen Mustian, Dean’s Professor in the Department of Surgery, was a senior author of the guidelines.

Summer applied genomics seminar

The summer applied genomics seminar is a weekly venue on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1009, to learn and engage in applied problems in genomics. The seminar series will include short presentations from students, trainees, and faculty on current research problems with an emphasis on pragmatic solutions. Presentations will be followed by a discussion to enhance practical understanding and assessment of genomics approaches, methods, and computational analyses. The seminar series is run as part of the Goergen Institute for Data Science MS program in applied genomics and is open to students and faculty interested in the application of genomics and genome technologies to problems in biology. Seminars feature:

  • June 5: Elsie Shogren, a postdoctoral student in biology
  • June 12: Juilee Thakar, an associate professor of microbiology and immunology, biomedical genetics, and biostatistics and computational biology
  • June 26: Hongbo Liu, an assistant professor of biomedical genetics

‘Seeds for Collaboration’ faculty and postdoc mixer

“Seeds for Collaboration” is a faculty and postdoc mixer sponsored by the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience and the School of Medicine and Dentistry dean’s office. At each event, colleagues mingle for half an hour, and then three 5-8 minute talks are presented. Attend on Tuesday, June 11, at 4:30 p.m. in LeChase Assembly Hall, (G-9576), Medical Center. Drinks and snacks are provided.

Attend the Community Design Center of Rochester’s ‘Community Conversation’

The University’s Center for Community Engagement is cosponsoring the Community Design Center (CDCR) of Rochester’s June “Community Conversation” on Friday, June 7, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the CDCR gallery, 1115 East Main Street, Door 3B. Discuss ways in which faculty, staff, and students from area colleges can get involved in supporting outstanding design principles and practices at the neighborhood level. Wilmot Shared Resources genomics seminar

Wilmot Shared Resources is hosting a genomics seminar as part of its Lunch and Learn Seminar Series on Tuesday, June 11, from noon to 1 p.m. in the K-307 Auditorium (3-6408), Medical Center. Attendees will learn who the Genomics Shared Resource staff are, what services the resource offers, how to access it, and how it can help your research and training in genomic analyses.
