Acing back-to-school season

The beginning of the school year can bring busy schedules, routine adjustments, and—for many parents and caregivers—lots of stress. Experts from Golisano Children’s Hospital have created a go-to guide with resources and advice to help you feel prepared as the school year begins.

In today’s issue:

  • Updates to the University’s Title IX policy
  • Details on a generative AI teaching group
  • The next LGBTQ Distinguished Alumni Lecture with Kathy Gerbasi ’71, ’76 (PhD)
TODAY'S UPDATES

Updates to Title IX policy

The University has revised its Policy on Title IX Sex Discrimination, Sex-Based Harassment, and Sex- and Gender-Based Misconduct in response to updated regulations issued by the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, which mandate how colleges and universities must respond to reports of sex discrimination under Title IX. You can review the full policy here. The main updates include:

  • Expanded definitions of sex discrimination and sex-based harassment.
  • All University employees (who are not confidential employees) are required to notify the Title IX Coordinator when they receive a disclosure of sex discrimination or sex-based harassment. This reporting obligation also applies to student employees who work in Residential Life or are in teaching or advising roles.
  • The reporting form remains the same. Training about employee reporting obligations is in development. The Title IX Office has prepared this guide for employees.
  • The applicable grievance process is determined based on the nature of the allegations and whether the parties are students or employees.
  • Misconduct addressed in the former Student Sexual Misconduct Policy has been added to the new policy, meaning there is now only one policy applicable to Title IX sex-based harassment by any community member and other categories of sex- and gender-based misconduct involving students.

Sign up for an appointment at one of the UHS Health Promotion Office’s free STI testing clinics throughout the semester. These clinics are held on Mondays from 4 to 7 p.m. in partnership with Trillium Health. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

University Health Service Primary Care

The goal of University Health Service (UHS) Primary Care is to provide excellent service to help students maintain or improve their health. If you are a full-time student in any of Rochester’s undergraduate or graduate programs, there is no need for an introductory visit. You are already a patient and have been assigned a primary care provider. Visit UHS Primary Care for illness visits, routine check-ups (select availability), management of chronic health conditions, medication management, or referrals. If you have a health care need, call (585) 275-2662 to schedule an appointment.

Are you studying in the US from abroad? Participate in a survey as part of a research study through the Warner School of Education and Human Development. The study aims to understand the adjustment experience and challenges for international students, such as stress due to living and studying in an unfamiliar culture, mental health-related concerns like feelings of isolation, and physical symptoms like trouble sleeping. Participants can win one of 20 $25 Starbucks gift cards. Find more information and take the survey here.
