TODAY’S UPDATES

New College Town shuttle stop and extended bookstore hours

Barnes & Noble Bookstore at College Town has extended its operating hours for the semester, providing more convenience for students, faculty, and staff to pick up books, supplies, and spirit items. The store hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Getting to the bookstore is easier than ever with the new Blue Line shuttle stop on Celebration Drive. When traveling toward the River Campus or the Medical Center, the stop is located by the Fitness Center. When traveling toward College Town, the stop is by Texas de Brazil. The new stop is a convenient way to reach the bookstore and all dining, food, and retail establishments in the College Town district.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Francis Gigliotti

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, October 1, for Francis Gigliotti, a professor emeritus of pediatrics, who died on August 18. Gigliotti joined the University faculty in 1988.

‘Navigating Professional Industries’ for underrepresented students

Join Antonio Williams, director for graduate diversity at the David T. Kearns Center, for a talk to empower underrepresented students as they embark on their professional journeys. The session will provide strategies for navigating various industries, from understanding workplace culture to building a solid network. Learn from experienced professionals who have successfully overcome barriers and achieved their career goals, and gain practical advice on leveraging your unique perspectives, advocating for yourself, and finding mentors to guide you. Whether you’re just starting or looking to advance your career, the talk will equip you with the tools and inspiration needed to thrive in any professional environment. Online sexual health program

Do you feel like you didn’t learn enough about sexual health before coming to the University or in your time spent here already? Join the 21-day online program “Sex Ed 101” to learn the basics of sexual health. Find more information and join at any time.

River Campus tour for graduate students

Are you a graduate student wanting to learn more about the River Campus? Take a tour to learn all about the various buildings and resources available. The event is open to all University graduate students and will be held on Friday, September 13, from 1 to 2 p.m. The event has a capacity limit so register today to save your spot.

Workshop on engaging students through office hours

Open to all University instructors, this one-hour Teaching Center Zoom workshop is designed to help instructors use office hours as an efficient and effective instructional tool. Learn best practices for structuring office hours to engage students in meaningful learning experiences. Register here to attend on Thursday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Workshops to enhance student well-being

Did you know that 85 percent of Rochester faculty and staff have talked to students about their well-being, but many haven’t received the training to handle those crucial conversations? Open to all faculty and student support staff, the Well-Being for Life and Learning Training Program will equip you with practical, compassionate skills to support students in distress. Check out upcoming workshops:

  • Suicide prevention workshops: September 17 from noon to 2 p.m. and September 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Compassion Fatigue: Supporting Those Who Support Others: September 19 from 2 to 3 p.m.

EAP Supervisor Series

The fall 2024 UR Medicine EAP Supervisor Series kicks off with the first virtual session, “Using EAP in Supervision,” on Wednesday, September 18, at noon. The session will provide all managers with a one-hour overview of EAP and will help improve their ability to recognize employees who are having personal problems that are adversely affecting their performance. Webinar on mastering your NIH data management and sharing plan

Are you ready to meet the National Institutes of Health’s data management and sharing standards? On Thursday, September 12, at 1 p.m. attend a webinar on “Mastering Your NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan,” which will give you an overview of the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing and guide you through the steps to effectively create a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP). From data management strategies to selecting the right repository, experts from the University Libraries’ Data Services Team will provide the tools and guidance you need to succeed. Register to receive the link to the webinar. First Club Rochester of the semester

Join Wilson Commons Student Activities, the Medallion Leadership Program, and Meliora Catering on Friday, September 13, for the first Club Rochester of the semester. Celebrate Rochester students as they “level up” at the Medallion Leadership Ceremony. Club Rochester is a happy hour offered twice each semester and includes drinks, free food, and networking opportunities. Attend from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons.

Grand rounds webinar on public health and health care collaboration

Attend a public health grand rounds webinar on Friday, September 20, at noon. Marielena Vélez de Brown, acting commissioner of public health at the Monroe County Department of Public Health will present “Public Health and Health Care Collaboration: Continued Progress Towards Whole Health.” Register to attend via Zoom. Eastman leadership development retreat for high school musicians

High school musicians are invited to a one-day retreat of interactive workshops to develop the skills necessary to engage in the community. Each session will focus on a topic necessary for interactive public performances, including musical entry points, project management, and leadership. Participants will work alongside a small cohort of like-minded peers, learning from world-class musicians and educators from the Eastman School of Music. During the retreat, participants will design a plan for a captivating public performance, and gain the tools and skills to fulfill the performance during the academic year. Students are required to register in advance by September 27 for a fee of $25. Local music educators can attend for free along with their students. Contact the Institute for Music Leadership if the cost is prohibitive to a student’s participation.
