How the immune system fails as cancer arises

New research led by Minsoo Kim, Dean’s Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, co-leader of the Cancer Microenvironment Research Program, and director of the Tumor Immunotherapy Research Program at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, confirms that a key molecule can reprogram immune cells that normally protect against infection and cancer, turning them into cells that promote cancer growth.

Scott Flaherty named director of student accounts and bursar

Scott Flaherty has been named director of student accounts and University bursar, effective August 1. Flaherty has served as a senior financial analyst in the Bursar’s Office since July 2020.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Thomas Schumacher

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, September 17, for Thomas Schumacher, a professor emeritus of piano at the Eastman School of Music, who died on May 31. Schumacher joined the University faculty in 1995.

These structured writing sessions meet weekly for two hours and are designed to support your writing process through guidance, accountability, and community. Sign up for the International Fashion Show

The International Students’ Association (ISA) will be hosting the International Fashion Show on Saturday, October 5, at 6 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. Students from many nations, cultures, and regions around the world will celebrate and raise awareness of the unique multicultural diversity that exists at the University by dressing in traditional attire of their own.

If you’d like to represent your nation, culture, or region, sign up by September 28. You are not required to be part of any student organization to participate; the ISA will take care of your accommodation needs, including helping with makeup and rehearsals so that you can look your best for the event. You will only need to bring yourself and your attire with you. The event will also feature giveaways for the audience.

‘America’s Got Regulatory Science Talent’ student competition

This annual competition is an opportunity for students to develop and present a proposed solution to a current FDA regulatory science need in areas ranging from personalized medicine and digital health to advanced manufacturing and risk communication. Solutions will focus on the science of developing new tools, standards, or approaches to assess the safety, efficacy, quality, and performance of FDA-regulated products. The competition will be held at noon on Wednesday, December 4, in the Helen Wood Hall Auditorium; lunch will be provided. Brief entry forms are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6. University Counseling Center is looking for students interested in joining its therapy groups. Group therapy can be a powerful way to better understand yourself, improve your relationships, and learn skills to manage emotional experiences and interpersonal relationships. Health Care Leadership Development Program

Designed for Medical Center physicians and health care leaders with an advanced degree, the Health Care Leadership Development Program (HCLDP) offers an opportunity to sharpen your business acumen and strengthen your health care management skills, without the commitment of a full graduate degree program.

The program’s targeted curriculum is taught by Simon Business School faculty and is split into four modules focusing on various aspects of health care administration. Faculty and staff with an advanced degree are encouraged to apply for the spring cohort. Admission priority is given to Medical Center leaders who plan to pursue all four modules.

Humanities Open Access book publishing grant

Faculty Open Access book publishing grant applications are due on Tuesday, October 15. A collaboration between the Humanities Center and the River Campus Libraries, the grant is for tenure-track and instructional faculty from departments and programs affiliated with the Humanities Center. Kafka Prize reading group starts today

The Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize committee is hosting a reading group for this year’s winning book, Straw Dogs of the Universe by Ye Chun. Ye will be visiting the University on October 25 for a reading and reception. The reading group takes place on Fridays this fall, starting today, September 13, at noon, and is open to staff, faculty, students, and community members. You do not need to attend each meeting or the entirety of meetings, which will feature discussions of various aspects of the book. Research talk on steering diffusion models for next-gen AI

Join the Goergen Institute for Data Science for “Steering Diffusion Models for Next-Gen AI,” a research talk with Morteza Mardani, a senior research staff member with NVIDIA Research. The talk will be held today, September 13, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400, or on Zoom.
