Patented ultrasound technologies improve diagnosis of cancer and other diseases

The United States Patent and Trademark Office recently issued four patents for diagnostic ultrasound technology developed by Kevin Parker, the William F. May Professor of Engineering, and his doctoral students. These new technologies could soon help make ultrasound a more powerful tool for diagnosing cancer, liver disease, and other pathologies.

In this 31-day wellness program through Well-U, experience autumn foliage as you make physical activity part of your daily routine. Be motivated by your teammates or work on your personal wellness goals as an individual, interact with the message board, gather helpful resources and interesting articles, and more. Workshops to enhance student well-being

Did you know that 85 percent of Rochester faculty and staff have talked to students about their well-being, but many haven’t received the training to handle those crucial conversations? Open to all faculty and student support staff, the Well-Being for Life and Learning Training Program will equip you with practical, compassionate skills to support students in distress. Check out upcoming workshops:

  • Suicide prevention workshops: September 17 from noon to 2 p.m. and September 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Compassion Fatigue: Supporting Those Who Support Others: September 19 from 2 to 3 p.m.
  • Trauma-Informed Conversations: September 20 from 10 to 11 a.m.
  • Creating Effective Learning Environments: September 25 from 3 to 4 p.m.

Proteomics, coffee, and donuts lecture

The Center for Advanced Research Technologies hosts a proteomics edition of its series “’Omics and Donuts” on Tuesday, September 17, at 9:30 a.m. Learn from Medical Center researchers utilizing advancements in proteomics to drive their research forward, and learn why cutting-edge technologies and knowledgeable staff make Rochester a national leader in proteomics research. Enjoy coffee from Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters and donuts from Donuts Delite.

Class on commuter tips for biking and walking

Commute by bike or on foot or exploring the idea? Join the Commuter Tips for Biking and Walking class to learn tips for route planning and essential equipment. This 15-minute online session takes place on Wednesday, September 18, from noon to 12:15 p.m. via Zoom. Registration is required. This session is part of a monthly series presented by the Department of Transportation and Logistics.

LGBTQ Distinguished Alumni Lecture with Kathy Gerbasi ’71, ’76 (PhD)

The Paul J. Burgettt Intercultural Center welcomes Rochester alumnus Kathy Gerbasi ’71, ’76 (PhD), best known for her years of work with the furry community. Gerbasi will share her story from her days on the Rochester campus, her introduction to the furry community, and her long career researching, learning, and helping others understand the “Furry Fandom.” Hors d’ oeuvres will be provided. This LGBTQ Distinguished Alumni Lecture takes place on Wednesday, September 18, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. Register here to attend.

Strong Recovery health and wellness fair

Join Strong Recovery in celebrating Recovery Month at its third annual Health and Wellness Fair on Friday, September 20, from 9 a.m. to noon at Brighton Business Center. Patients, families, supporters, and the community are invited to the celebration. Community organizations will be tabling at the free event with recovery resources.

Submit abstracts for 29th annual Wilmot Scientific Symposium

Wilmot Cancer Institute’s 29th annual Scientific Symposium takes place Thursday, November 7, and it’s time for students, trainees, and faculty members to submit basic, translational, or clinical cancer-related abstracts for consideration. The deadline to submit is Friday, September 27. Learn more or submit your abstract.

Rochester alumna Donna Strickland ’89 (PhD) meets with students

Last week, Donna Strickland ’89 (PhD)—only the third woman ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics—was back at Rochester to meet with students and faculty. Strickland also attended the inaugural Institute of Optics colloquium honoring optics pioneer and University trustee James C. Wyant ’67 (MS), ’69 (PhD), ’21 (Honorary).
