University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, October 15, for Laura Chaffer, a senior registered nurse 3 in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on September 18. Chaffer joined the University staff in 1986.
Studying the system will give an unprecedented understanding of these two-rock systems, says Alice Quillen, a professor of physics and astronomy and a senior scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. About 15 percent of asteroids are thought to be binaries. “One of the mysteries about binary asteroids is they’re predicted to fall apart really quickly,” she says, because of radiation pressure from the sun. A slight wobble in Dimorphos’s orbit might explain how it stays gravitationally bound to Didymos.
Zoom session on Flourishing in Medicine core workshop agenda
Join Mick Krasner, a professor emeritus of medicine, today, October 8 at 3:30 p.m., for a brief Zoom session to discuss the Flourishing in Medicine core workshop agenda, topics, and format and to answer questions. The workshop itself will take place November 6–9 at Chapin Mill Retreat Center. The workshop is approved for tuition reimbursement for eligible University employees. Additionally, for Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital medical staff insured by MCIC, the workshop is among the opportunities to qualify this year for a 15 percent malpractice insurance premium differential through the URMC/MCIC Premium Differential program, when combined with the annual online high-reliability course. No registration is required.
Workshop for research investigators
The David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity, the Provost’s Office of Academic Equity, and the Faculty Development and Diversity Officers of the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences are cosponsoring the faculty workshop “For Research Investigators: Broadening Participation and Working with Minority Serving Institutions.” The workshop is an opportunity for faculty currently funded by, or seeking funding from, federal sponsors that require a Broadening Participation statement or other DEI content. It will also be of particular interest to faculty seeking to partner or collaborate with Minority Serving Institutions. RSVP to attend on Thursday, October 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Gamble Room, Rush Rhees Library. Lunch will be provided.

Gateways Music Festival program schedule
The Gateways Music Festival in association with the Eastman School of Music launches its 2024–25 season—taking place locally and throughout the country—with an expansive lineup of performances by professional Black classical artists.
