Sevin Yeltekin reappointed as Simon Business School dean

Sevin Yeltekin has been reappointed to a second five-year term as dean of the Simon Business School, a position she has held since her initial appointment in 2020.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Robert Betts

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, November 12, for Robert Betts, a professor emeritus in the Department of Medicine, who died on October 6. Betts joined the University faculty in 1966. Note: A University network connection/VPN is required to access the obituary on the Medical Center intranet.

Join Rochester’s annual 42-hour hackathon, DandyHacks, November 15–17 in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. Form teams (or go solo) to create a project you can show off on your resume. Workshop on developing an equitable grading philosophy

Open to all Rochester instructors, this one-hour Teaching Center Zoom workshop is designed to help instructors develop defensible, effective, and equitable grading practices that evaluate and encourage student learning. Register here to attend on Thursday, November 7, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Health Bites webinar on building a strong financial future

Join UR Medicine EAP, Well-U, and Andrea Colline from CCCS on Tuesday, November 12, at noon and learn how to create a plan for your finances through motivation and financial discipline. Find strategies to develop specific and attainable financial goals that fit your values to build a strong financial future. Register here.

Earn your 2024 wellness incentive

If you are enrolled in a University health care plan, you are eligible to earn up to $325 per calendar year by participating in certain Well-U programs. Log in to your wellness portal to complete a personal health assessment and enroll in a lifestyle management or condition management program. Foodlink is an approved caterer for University events

The University has added Foodlink to its list of approved caterers. Any department can order from Foodlink when purchasing food services for University events. Learn more here.

One Community post-election drop-in conversation

All members of the University community are invited to join the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center for a bipartisan post-election drop-in conversation on Wednesday, November 6, from 9 to 11 a.m. or 6 to 9 p.m. in Douglass Commons, Room 305. The event is cosponsored by the University Counseling Center, Center for Community Engagement, and Office of Equity and Inclusion. Light refreshments will be provided. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the access provided, email the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center. In all situations, a good-faith effort (up until the time of the event) will be made to provide accommodations.

Higher Education Opportunity Program/Education Opportunity Program College Fair

As part of First-Gen Fall, the University’s Upward Bound Program is hosting the 8th annual Higher Education Opportunity Program/Education Opportunity Program College Fair on Thursday, November 7, in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. High school students will have the chance to meet with representatives from a diverse array of institutions, learn about various programs, and gather valuable information. Students will also engage in a panel discussion with current Higher Education Opportunity Program students. The event is hosted by the David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity and the Office of Minority Student Affairs.

Data Bloom workshop series

Data Bloom, a workshop series designed to help you create attractive data visualizations and learn skills to better manipulate your data, continues this month. In the second year of this workshop series, the River Campus Libraries can help you take your Excel, R, Python, Tableau, ArcGIS, and Data Visualization skills to the next level. At the end of the series, students can submit to the Data Visualization Competition where five prizes will be awarded. Wilmot Shared Resources session on reducing barriers for data analytics

Wilmot Shared Resources is hosting a Lunch and Learn Seminar Series session “Reducing Barriers for Data Analytics” on Tuesday, November 12, from noon to 1 p.m. in the K307 Auditorium (3-6408), Medical Center. Find an overview of the informatics team, the projects they’ve worked on, and how you can use them in your research. Register here.

International Education Week events

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to celebrate International Education Week November 18–22, part of a nationwide initiative by the U.S. Department of State. This year’s theme, Embracing Global Narratives, highlights the power of intercultural awareness and the integration of domestic and international students. Local gifts and goodies at Friends of Strong’s holiday market

Get a head start on holiday shopping on Friday, November 22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Sarah Flaum Atrium, Medical Center. You’ll find unique, hand-crafted gifts and goodies—including a special visit from Strong’s pet therapy dogs—at the market, back for its ninth year.
