Goergen Institute’s name change reflects the University’s artificial intelligence expertise

Previously the Goergen Institute for Data Science, the newly retitled Goergen Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence serves as an interdisciplinary hub of experts at Rochester.

Kate Valcin named chief nursing executive at the Medical Center

After a nationwide search, E. Katherine Valcin has been named the Medical Center’s chief nursing executive and chief nursing officer of Strong Memorial Hospital. She will also serve as assistant dean of clinical practice in the School of Nursing, continuing to bridge clinical care and education.

The truth about AI-generated research and its impact on education

Forbes, December 20

Robert Novy-Marx, the Lori and Alan S. Zekelman Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the Simon Business School, co-led a groundbreaking experiment to explore AI’s role in academic writing. The research used AI tools to produce 288 academic papers predicting stock market trends. According to the study, these papers adhered to rigorous academic standards, delivering well-structured introductions, methodologies, and conclusions. The study focuses on academic finance, but its implications stretch far beyond.

Childcare grant for PhD students

Are you a full-time PhD student? Do you have children, aged newborn through six years old? If yes to both questions, you may wish to apply for the University’s childcare grant for PhD students.

More information can be found on the program web page, which includes an overview of the program, eligibility requirements, an FAQ, and a link to the application portal, open through Friday, January 31, for the spring 2025 grant. Email childcaregrant@rochester.edu with questions.


FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

2024 W-2s for faculty and staff available in HRMS by January 31

2024 W-2 forms will be available in HRMS towards the end of January. If you previously consented to receive your W-2 form electronically through the HRMS employee self-service process (before December 12), you will receive an email from HRMS in January when your W-2 is available to access and print. All employees can access their W-2 forms in HRMS once they are available, regardless of whether you consented to receive your W-2 electronically. If you did not consent to receive your W-2 electronically, your 2024 W-2 will be mailed to your mailing address indicated in HRMS. To verify your mailing address in HRMS, go to Self Service > Personal Information > Personal Details. If your mailing address needs to be updated in HRMS, complete the HRMS Address Update Form and send it to the Payroll office as provided on the form. All address updates for 2024 W-2 forms must be received by the Payroll office by Wednesday, January 15. Address updates made in myURHR will not be updated in HRMS.

Safe Space sessions

Registration is now available for LGBTQ+ Safe Space courses offered through April 2025. Available to all faculty and staff, session dates can be found by searching within MyPath for the “Safe Space Playlist.” Begin with the first course, “Part 1: Gaining Knowledge.” Upon completion, employees can register for “Part 2: Creating Safety,” paving the way to become a University LGBTQ+ Safe Space Champion. Well-U offers UR Medicine EAP and Behavioral Health Partners (BHP) to help you confidentially and confidently manage a variety of life challenges. Check your eligibility and set your first appointment by calling (585) 276-9110 for EAP or (585) 276-6900 for BHP.

Spring 2025 tuition reimbursement

If you are attending an outside college or university for the spring 2025 semester, you must submit your tuition reimbursement application in myURHR Workday. Click on “Benefits and Pay” under Apps, then click on “Employee Tuition Reimbursement Application” under Suggested Links. All applications must be submitted no later than 30 days after the start of the course.

Creative Workshop winter open house at MAG

Join the Memorial Art Gallery Creative Workshop instructors and staff for a winter open house on Saturday, January 11, from 10 a.m. to noon. The drop-in program will feature instructor-led demonstrations of programs like pottery, printmaking, and painting, as well as hands-on activity-making for all ages. Learn about class and camp offerings, meet the instructors, and sign up for upcoming programs. It’s free to the public, and all ages are welcome.

Workshop on mastering your NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan

Are you ready to meet the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) standards for data management and sharing? Do you understand the new public access policy? Hosted by University Libraries Data Services, the virtual workshop will give you an overview of the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing, guide you through the steps to effectively create a Data Management and Sharing Plan, and give an overview of the 2024 NIH Public Access Policy. William Warfield Scholarship Fund benefit concert featuring Holden Turner ’25E

Baritone Holden Turner ’25E, the 2024–25 William Warfield Scholarship Fund recipient, will join a lineup of performers for the William Warfield Scholarship Fund 2025 Benefit Concert: “Let Freedom Sing” on January 19. Since its establishment in 1977, the scholarship has provided financial aid to more than 60 African American classical singers, including Eastman School of Music students and high school-aged performers.
