Two Open Letter books nominated by National Book Critics Circle

Two books edited and published by Open Letter, the University’s nonprofit literary translation press, are on the longlist for the 2024 Barrios Book in Translation Prize—awarded annually by the National Book Critics Circle. Read more about the titles Melvill by Rodrigo Fresán, translated from Spanish by Will Vanderhyden ’13 (MA), and Muzzle for Witches by Dubravka Ugresic, translated from Croatian by Ellen Elias-Bursać.

Flags will be lowered for Svetlana Stezherinskaya

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, February 4, for Svetlana Stezherinskaya, a radiation therapist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on November 30. Stezherinskaya joined the University staff in 2019.

The online employee tuition waiver application for courses taken at the University is now available in myURHR Workday. Using your Active Directory, click on “Benefits and Pay” on the homepage under the Apps section, and click on “Employee Tuition Waiver Application” under the Suggested Links section. All applications must be submitted within 30 days from the start of your course. Find more information here.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with book reading

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, join facilitators from the Office of Equity and Inclusion’s restorative practices team to read and reflect on excerpts from King’s book, Strength to Love. The event takes place on Zoom on Wednesday, January 15, from noon to 1 p.m. Find out more.

‘Kids Create Packages’ series at MAG

Celebrate the best of winter and the Memorial Art Gallery with 10 weeks of special art-making focused on the season and the museum’s newest exhibitions. Projects and themes are different every week. Annual Friends of Strong wine-tasting fundraiser

Susan B. Anthony Center Legacy Award nominations due February 10

The Susan B. Anthony Center is calling for nominations for three annual awards: the Susan B. Anthony Emerging Leader Award, the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Service Award.

Candidates should have an affiliation with the University. Find details on each award and submit your nomination at the above links by Monday, February 10.

Kevin Hays Trio added to Eastman Presents season

The Kevin Hays Trio is set to perform in Kilbourn Hall, Eastman Theatre, at 7:30 p.m. on February 13, replacing the previously scheduled Fred Hersch Trio. Find details and where to purchase tickets.
