Flourish Festival events for students
A Health Bites workshop on perennial gardening for employees
There’s growing research linking air pollution exposure to cognitive decline; scientists think very fine, inhalable particles in the air could trigger chemical changes once they reach the brain, says Deborah Cory-Slechta, a professor of environmental medicine and of neuroscience. She adds that wearing an N95 or surgical mask and using indoor air filters on days when air quality is worse (including because of wildfire smoke) can minimize your exposure.
Giving to the United Way helps foster a healthy community. You can now add a quarter to your order at Café 601 and other Medical Center food locations to help support programs that fight hunger and food insecurity in Rochester and the Finger Lakes region.
If you haven’t already, you can make a pledge to the United Way of any amount or sign up for continuous payroll deduction. Doing so makes you eligible for this week’s prize drawing, which includes gift cards to Wegmans, Amazon, and HomeGoods.
Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program open house
The Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program will hold an academic open house today, April 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room G-121A, Rush Rhees Library. Drop in for snacks and to learn more about courses, minors, and clusters.
Flourish Festival: STI testing, mind-body wellness panel
Rochester students can explore a diverse lineup of mindfulness and wellness practices, interactive workshops, and educational sessions, plus giveaways to support mental and emotional well-being during the Flourish Festival, April 7–11. Students who attend four or more events during the week will be entered to win one of three giveaways.
As part of the festival, the Health Promotion Office and Monroe County Department of Health will hold free STI testing on Tuesday, April 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Wilson Commons. Spots are limited; sign up today.
You can also attend a mind-body wellness panel on April 11 at 12:30 p.m. in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons. Learn about somatic healing, yoga, meditation, and trauma-informed mindfulness; how breath, movement, and meditation can transform your well-being; and discover campus resources. Come with questions or submit them beforehand. Refreshments will be provided. Learn more and register.
Library spaces survey and tours
Students: The River Campus Libraries want to know what you think of its spaces. Take this brief survey to offer your feedback. You are also invited to join a group tour of Rush Rhees Library, where you can share your thoughts on different library spaces. Email Jenny Arbelo to register for a 30-minute drop-in tour. April 10—VR for Molecular Design: Steve McCloskey, CEO of Nanome, pioneers VR for molecular design, aiming to enhance scientific research accessibility.
April 15—XR Research and Development: Nihar Mohanty, a senior R&D manager at Meta, specializes in AR, waveguides, and materials development, and drives advancements in near-eye display technology.
April 17—XR Learning and Assessment: Robb Lindgren, a professor of educational psychology and curriculum and instruction at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, researches learning with interactive and immersive digital technologies.
Digital skills sharing workshop
The CNY Humanities Corridor Global Digital Humanities working group hosts an event on April 25 from noon to 4 p.m. to share current digital research projects, plans, and approaches to digital pedagogy for feedback and discussion. Meet others interested or engaged in incorporating digital skills into their research and teaching, including graduate fellows from the University’s Meliora Digital and Interdisciplinary Program. 36th annual Genetics Day
The annual Genetics Day Poster Symposium takes place on Monday, April 28, with a keynote lecture from Marisa Bartolomei, the Perelman Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Pennsylvania.
Students, postdocs, and staff are encouraged to submit posters by noon on Monday, April 21. Cash prizes are available for poster presenters. The poster session will be held in Sarah Flaum Atrium from 1 to 3 p.m.
Eastman Summer programs
