Joanne Law ’98 (PhD), an inventor and optical engineer, has established a new endowed fund—the Joanne Y. Law Distinguished Professorship in Optics—at the University’s Institute of Optics. Her generous $800,000 gift will be amplified by an additional $1.2 million from the Wyant Challenge, a historic initiative launched in 2022 by the late optics pioneer James Wyant ’69 (PhD), trustee emeritus, and his wife, Tammy.
IACLEA reaccreditation begins at DPS
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is undergoing professional reaccreditation with the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). This evaluation confirms the department’s alignment with campus safety best practices. Community members are invited to participate in the process by providing feedback via telephone comments on April 14. Find additional information here.

Host a graduating student
Due to various factors, some Rochester students graduating in May may not have family or friends present to celebrate their accomplishments. You can make a difference by showing your support and filling in for their family by hosting a grad. Show your interest here if you would like to get to know one of the students, take pictures and videos, and are available to attend a department ceremony on Saturday, May 17, or Sunday, May 18. Montefiore Einstein seeks researchers for discussion groups
The Clinical and Translational Science Institute is collaborating with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine to reduce research roadblocks to including people with disabilities in health research. Investigators without the experience of including people with disabilities in research are needed to join an online evening discussion group,which will include several adults with developmental disabilities and one other researcher. Participants will receive up to $75 via a gift card or can donate that amount to a nonprofit. Groups will take place on April 23 and 30 and May 7 at 5:30 p.m. If interested, email Karen Bonuck or Patrick George.
Ultra training workshops
Will you be teaching in Ultra for the first time in summer or fall 2025? The Transition Workshop Series is scheduled to help support you. Pick dates and register for workshops that help with teaching in Summer A, Summer B, or fall.
Stop by Wilson Quad today, April 11, from noon to 2 p.m. to enjoy cuisine from the Eat Greek food truck. Open to all students, faculty, and staff, the truck accepts cash and cards. This event is part of the Flourish Festival. Students who attend four events will be entered into one of three wellness giveaways.
Palms available through the Medical Center’s Interfaith Chapel
The chaplain’s office will have palms available on Sunday, April 13, in observance of Palm Sunday. They will be in the Medical Center’s Interfaith Chapel or can be delivered to patients or staff by leaving a voicemail at (585) 275-2187.
A conversation with former ACLU president Nadine Strossen
Join David Primo, the Ani and Mark Gabrellian Professor and a professor of political science and business administration, in conversation with Nadine Strossen, former president of the ACLU, about the future of free speech on college campuses in the United States and around the world. The event takes place Monday, April 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400. It includes a moderated Q&A with the audience and is open to University students, faculty, staff, and alumni. ROCTalks: The Power of Perspective
The annual ROCTalks event takes place Thursday, April 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the May Room, Wilson Commons. “The Power of Perspective” is an evening of storytelling, advocacy, and conversations featuring faculty, students, and community members. Food will be provided.
‘Voices of XR’ series
Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X’s speaker series, “Voices of XR,” brings immersive technology scholars and professionals to the University.
April 22—VR as a Portal to Film: Kyoko Omori’s talk explores how virtual reality (VR) can recreate a 1920s Tokyo movie theater experience with live benshi storytelling, highlighting VR’s ability to revive historical media practices and inspire innovative storytelling.
Attend the annual Susan B. Anthony Legacy Awards breakfast, celebrating professional women leaders and undergraduate women in the University community who have made outstanding contributions to their fields and beyond. The event takes place Saturday, April 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglas Commons. Learn more about the awards and recipients and register here.
Register by April 25 for the Corporate Challenge
The JP Morgan Corporate Challenge will be held on Thursday, May 22, at 7:15 p.m. at Innovative Field. Participants can walk or run the 3.5-mile race with the University team. The entry fee is $43 and includes two shirts. As a corporate event, this is only open to University employees and graduate students. Register here under the “University of Rochester UR” team by April 24. Everyone can walk/run at their own pace, and after the event, the University will submit the fastest teams. Medical Center HIV vaccine research study
If you are HIV-negative, healthy, and between the ages of 18 and 55, you may be eligible to take part in an upcoming HIV vaccine research study at the Medical Center. Volunteers will need to be in the Rochester area over the summer. Participants receive approximately $750. Call the Rochester Victory Alliance at (585) 756-2329 or send an email for more information.
