University and RIT develop experimental quantum communications network
Researchers at the University and the Rochester Institute of Technology recently connected campuses with an experimental quantum communications network using two optical fibers. Rochester Quantum Network (RoQNET) uses single photons to transmit information about 11 miles along fiber-optic lines at room temperature using optical wavelengths.

NASA’s Cold Atom Lab, a first-of-its-kind facility aboard the International Space Station, has performed a series of trailblazing experiments based on the quantum properties of ultracold atoms using an atom interferometer, which can precisely measure gravity, magnetic fields, and other forces. “I expect that space-based atom interferometry will lead to exciting new discoveries, fantastic quantum technologies impacting everyday life, and will transport us into a quantum future,” says Nick Bigelow, the Lee A. DuBridge Professor of Physics, director of URNano, and a Cold Atom Lab principal investigator.
