The 2025 Biomedical Data Science Hackathon will take place online from August 19–23 and is open to all University undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs. How educators can help students navigate misinformation
When misinformation can travel faster than facts, teaching young people to discern credible sources has never been more urgent. Kevin Meuwissen, an associate professor and the chair of teaching and curriculum at the Warner School of Education and Human Development, explores how educators can help.
“Meme stocks” are companies that attract a cult-like following that can lead to volatile swings in stocks as retail traders swiftly move to invest. Daniel Burnside, a clinical professor of finance at Simon Business School, says that “with companies like Kohl’s, GoPro, Rocket—you’re not investing in fundamentals, you’re betting on crowd psychology and social media dynamics,” adding “Researchers don’t have good models for this…you can’t rely on any good economics to guide you here.” If someone decides to invest in a meme stock, Burnside encourages potential investors to “keep it small.”
