When Washington tried to starve industries of loans—and failed

Launched in 2013, the US Department of Justice’s Operation Choke Point pressured banks to cut ties with businesses considered socially or reputationally risky. A new study by a team of economists from URochester, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, and the Federal Reserve Board finds the strategy fell short.

Attend a “Todd Talk” conversation with Arnulfo Maldonado, Tony Award nominee and Lortel and Obie Award-winning costume and scenic designer, and Nigel Maister, the Russell and Ruth Peck Artistic Director of the International Theatre Program. Registration is required to attend via Zoom today, October 6, at 5 p.m.

Simon Sands leadership lecture

Attend the Sands Leadership Lecture, “The Skillsets We Need To Remain Relevant In The Age Of AI,” featuring Pinar Seyhan Demirdag, cofounder and CEO of Cuebric. The event takes place on Tuesday, October 7, with the lecture from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in the Sands Constellation Auditorium, Gleason Hall, and a networking reception to follow in the Eisenberg Rotunda, Schlegel Hall. Register to attend.

Lecture: ‘Aesthetics as a Form of Power: Learning from Bourdieu’

Barbara Carneval, a professor of philosophy at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, presents the lecture “Aesthetics as a Form of Power: Learning from Bourdieu” on Thursday, October 9, at 5 p.m. in Rush Rhees Library. Find details here.

Infection and Immunity Symposium

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to learn about clinical and translational research at the interface of immunology and infectious diseases at this inaugural full-day event on October 27. Prominent external and internal speakers will discuss emerging technologies and challenges in the field, including in education and training. The symposium, hosted by the Division of Infectious Diseases, will also include a poster session, lunch, breaks, and a closing reception. Submit poster abstracts by October 10.

On Saturday, November 1, support the UR Medicine Food Pantry at the Wegmans East Avenue Grocery RunSign up for the walk or run of your choice and join the UR Medicine Food Pantry Team to support its continuing efforts to serve patients and expand operations. The event signup fee goes directly to the food pantry. You can also support by donating to the food pantry team’s fundraiser.

Paws for Stress Relief tonight

Paws for Stress Relief brings therapy dogs to campus for students to spend time with. This monthly program from the Health Promotion Office will take place today in the Goergen Athletic Center from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

‘Research 101’ information session

Undergraduate researchers from Residence Life’s First Year Fellows and Research Ambassadors from the Office of Undergraduate Research are teaming up for “Research 101” in Susan B. Anthony Halls on Tuesday, October 7, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Sponsored GAC memberships for part-time students

The Mindful University Project is offering a limited number of scholarships for part-time students to receive free yoga and gym access at the Goergen Athletic Center.

Meliora Scholar applications open

Sophomores are invited to apply to be a Meliora Scholar. This selective program funds independent research in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Students receive faculty mentoring, take part in enriching activities, and join a vibrant peer community. The application deadline is October 24.

America’s Got Regulatory Science Talent Competition

This annual competition is an opportunity for students to develop and present a proposed solution to a current FDA regulatory science need in areas ranging from personalized medicine and digital health to advanced manufacturing and risk communication. Register by November 5. The competition takes place on December 3 at noon at the Helen Wood Hall Auditorium.
