In memoriam

Flags will be lowered for Jerome Kaye

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, and the flags atop the Eastman Theatre at the corner of Gibbs and Main Streets, will be lowered on Tuesday, June 16, for Jerome Kaye, a professor emeritus of biology, who died on May 6. Kaye joined the University in 1959.

Bacteria-based bioplastics reduce ocean waste

What if there were a way to avoid the problem of plastic pollution while still reaping the benefits of plastic’s durability, versatility, and low cost? Anne S. Meyer, an associate professor of biology, and her colleagues have created “bio-stickers” that speed up plastic breakdown in marine environments.

A job market leaving young graduates behind could scar them for years

The New York Times, June 5

Though the gap has narrowed in recent years, the unemployment rate for recent college graduates is still lower than for all young workers. “They’re still doing much better than if they hadn’t gone to college,” says Lisa Kahn, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor in the Social Sciences. “That’s an important part of the narrative that people sometimes miss.”
