Carl Chiarenza, the Fanny Knapp Allen Professor of Art and Art History from 1986 until he retired in 1998, is being remembered as a notable American photographer and an erudite scholar, and was widely admired for his generosity and warmth. After retirement, he was named artist-in-residence and remained available for critiques and classroom visits.

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, and the flags atop the Eastman Theatre at the corner of Gibbs and Main Streets, will be lowered Tuesday, June 23, for Chiarenza, who died on May 3.

This year’s Rochester International Jazz Festival lineup will feature numerous musicians from the Eastman School of Music community—current students, faculty, staff, and alumni—as well as students and faculty from the Eastman Community Music School. The festival runs Friday, June 19, through Saturday, June 27, with performances held at multiple downtown Rochester venues, including Eastman concert spaces.

Unlike edits to standard body cells, any changes made to reproductive cells are passed down to future generations. That means edits—or errors—in a clinical setting wouldn’t end with that child but would be passed down their family line, altering the gene pool forever.

“How would we as a society intervene if the intervention led to serious health or reproductive consequences?
