Lot 113 – Three Bottles – Southern Rhone and Southern Rhone Inspired
Donated By: Dr. Timothy O’Connor and Dr. Avice O’Connell
Estimated Value: $1,835

Grenache is the signature grape of the Southern Rhône, celebrated for its expressive red-fruit character, with distinctive strawberry, cherry and herb notes, as well as some rosés. Styles vary widely from location to location and producer to producer, but Grenache reds by nature almost always are bursting with fruit. These three wines – two from the Southern Rhone and one from Australia – show Grenache at its best.
The highlight of the collection is the 1994 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve, a particularly compelling bottle from one of the Southern Rhône’s most revered and distinctive producers. Château Rayas occupies a singular place in the world of fine wine, with its wines coveted by collectors for their individuality, elegance and exceptional reputation. A mature vintage from this iconic estate offers a rare opportunity to explore a celebrated expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Joining this exceptional bottle are a 2013 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Le Claux and a 2004 Clarendon Hills Kangarilla McLaren Vale Grenache from Australia, completing a trio that celebrates the depth, diversity and enduring appeal of Grenache.
