Pre- and Post-1800 Courses

As a rule, the following courses in English will always fulfill the major requirement for a course in English or American literature before 1800:

200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 206, 207, 208, 209, 210, 211, 213, 215, 217, 218

And the following numbers count for courses in English or American literature after 1800:

220, 221, 222, 223, 225, 226, 227, 228, 230, 231, 232, 233, 235, 236, 237, 238

Other courses, such as 243, Studies in a Major Author, 244, Studies in a Literary Mode, 380, Advanced Seminar, will vary in fulfilling pre- or post-1800, depending on the topic or author(s) chosen. A course such as Dante's Divine Comedy, though cross-listed as ENG 206, will not fulfill the requirement for a pre-1800 course in English or American Literature. Students with questions about such courses should contact the Director of Undergraduate Study.
