New Device Could Lower Blood Pressure

Doctors at the Medical Center were the first in the nation to implant a new device that could regulate blood pressure much the way a pacemaker regulates a person's heartbeat.

The battery-powered generator is placed under the skin near the neck and activates the body's natural blood-pressure regulation systems.

"This device, if found effective, would offer a way to lower blood pressure in patients who have not been able to control their blood pressure with medications," says Karl Illig, chief of vascular surgery and principal investigator in the trial.

Associate professors John Bisongnano and James Sloand were primary coinvestigators in the trial.
