Restoration (System and Data Recovery) Policy

File restoration requests are to be made by only system administrators, DBA's and help-desk personnel. These individuals are to be knowledgeable about the system for which the data is to be restored and are tasked with responsibility for that system's integrity.

Here, "system" is defined as an entity defined by hardware, database, or business application.

Any "high-level" restoration that could impact a large number of users or critical systems must be approved by the administrator on-call for that system, although the initial request may be initiated by a help desk representative. This judgement is made at the discretion of DCS Production Support unless specific instructions indicating policy are in place.

Under this policy, any of the following personnel may be authorized to initiate a file restoration request:

  • System Administrator for the specific system.
  • Database Administrator for databases on a system
  • Properly Trained Help Desk Representative required to be cognizant of the system in question and tasked with handling general user problems.

The general intent of this policy is to exclude general users (application users or development programmers) from initiating their own requests without bearing any administrative responsibility for the affected system. Individuals with the proper level of administrative responsibility and system knowledge are assumed to know the extent of ramifications surrounding the restoration of the files / system in question.

It is highly recommended that individuals requesting a critical or high-impact restore, especially in cases where after-hours support would be required, contact DCS Operations at 275-9194. This will insure that the appropriate personnell are being contacted to handle the request.
