Location: Rush Rhees Library
Room:
Costs: FREE
» Description

A lavish exhibition of literary, cinematic, popular, visual, and historical materials illustrating the appeal of Robin Hood from the 18th to the 21st centuries.  This exhibit, in Rush Rhees Library and elsewhere on campus, will include previously unshown photographs from the George Eastman House, items from the Strong National Museum of Play,  and thousands of items in paper media (printed books, sheets, ephemera, cartoons, comic books, boys’ serials, garlands, prose lives, “histories,” posters from well known and obscure films and TV), film and TV recordings (DVDs, VCR tapes, various film formats of commercial, public, and cable productions), musical recordings (popular song, operettas, rock and roll, rap, soundtracks, spoken word, and more), along with other artifacts such as games, puzzles, Viewmaster reels, teapots and plates, and more.

Thomas Hahn is a professor of English whose teaching centers on the sponsorship, production, and interpretation of texts and images from the earlier Middle Ages through the early modern period. Recent papers, publications, and seminars have concentrated on those scattered or huddled at the edges of emerging European identities, including women, Indians, Jews, heretics, Robin Hood and other outlaws, virtuous pagans, popular chivalric heroes, and other monstrous types.

Exhibitions:
An Impression of the Middle Ages: Production Stills from Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood

The Americanization of Robin Hood, 1883-1923

Increasingly, the global economy is becoming knowledge-based, and dependent on new knowledge and its application. Closer to home, the population of the United States, and indeed that of many countries, has acquired a global profile, with the concomitant need to be responsive to the educational and health needs such diversity entails. Universities are called upon to prepare their students and scholars for global leadership in this uncharted environment. This presentation will address relevant issues inherent in this task, and suggest strategies for educating our students to meet the challenges presented.

Open Exhibit: Memorial Art Gallery Exhibit: Walter Goodman’s The Printseller's Window: Solving A Painter’s Puzzle
Time: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: Memorial Art Gallery
Room:
Costs: FREE
» Description

In 1998, Memorial Art Gallery Director Grant Holcomb bid on a mysterious painting on the auction block at Sotheby’s. Almost nothing was known about it, or about its remarkably talented painter, but Holcomb’s risk paid off. In a review of auction sales that year, one writer hailed the work as "a masterpiece that is the equal of the best of William Harnett…John Peto…and John Haberle…the three great American titans of trompe l’oeil." With photographs, engravings, and antique bits of bric-a-brac—all overseen by a bespectacled and bearded figure—The Printseller is filled with puzzling bits that suggest a story. This exhibition tells how the painting’s secrets have been given up one by one through the painstaking detective work of guest curator Pete Brown.

Time: 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Location: Dewey Hall
Room: Room 2-162
Costs: FREE
» Description

Presented by George Denton, University of Maine, as part of the Fairchild Colloquium.

The concept that Earth has experienced a great ice age emerged more than a century ago. However, 12,000 to 18,000 years ago, an unusual warming pattern affected the southern globe, including Antarctica, New Zealand and South America. Understanding this extraordinary warming event lies at the heart of solving the Ice Age puzzle.

Presented by the Fairchild Colloquium on Climate Change and Sustainability
The colloquium, organized by the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, introduces the current status of our understanding of climate changes in the recent past, of the interaction between atmosphere and hydrosphere to form climatic conditions today and in the future, and to look at the consequences of climate change on the environment and society. It is named after Herman LeRoy Fairchild (1850-1943), pioneer in glaciology, first geology professor at the University of Rochester, and co-founder of the Geological Society of America (GSA).

George Denton is Libra Professor of Earth Sciences, University of Maine.  He is also an adjunct senior scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. His main research interest is the geological history of large ice sheets and smaller mountain glaciers. Another interest is abrupt ocean-atmosphere reorganizations in glacial cycles. As a consequence he has published on extensive field mapping of glacial deposits and features in Antarctica, South America, New Zealand and the Arctic. He is a co-author of The Last Great Ice Sheets. In 1990, Denton was presented with the Vega Medal in Stockholm. He was elected as a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1996 and as a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2002. A graduate of Tufts University, he earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in geology from Yale University and has been awarded honorary degrees by Stockholm University and the University of Edinburgh.
