Training, Career Fair for City Residents Hosted

The City of Rochester and University will host the Rochester Employment Training and Career Fair on Aug. 22 and 23 at the Staybridge Suites Hotel, 1000 Genesee St., to bolster employment for city residents and promote professional opportunities for minority job seekers.

“The Rochester economy is in the midst of one of the most significant transitions in the city’s history and it is crucial that all of our residents have opportunities to find meaningful employment as we move from a manufacturing-based to a knowledge-based economy,” said Mayor Richards. “The University of Rochester is at the center of that transition, so I am grateful to President Seligman for helping us ensure the investments we make in this transition reach every segment of our population. I also want to thank the many employers who are participating in the Rochester Employment Training and Career Fair for demonstrating their commitment to Rochester’s future.”

“The University is proud to continue its successful partnership with the City of Rochester. Working together, this inaugural event will bring together key resources in our community to create meaningful connections between city residents and local employers,” said University of Rochester President Joel Seligman. “As the economy continues to rebound, Rochester is poised to capitalize on its highly skilled labor force in the coming years. The University is excited to help facilitate new career matches as part of its ongoing commitment to the community we serve.”

The Employment Training and Career Fair is the result of several months of collaboration between the City and the University to address the continued need for employment opportunities for minority city residents—a group that faces higher unemployment rates than non-minority residents and individuals living in the suburbs.

The first day, Aug. 22, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature workshops on improving employment skills for the new economy. Topics will cover such subjects as cover letters and resumes, job-search strategies and internships, civil-service job applications and testing, tips and strategies for successful interviews and how to prepare for a career fair.

The second day, Aug. 23, will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature a Career Fair with more than a dozen employers, including:

  • University of Rochester
  • City of Rochester
  • The Employment Store
  • The ARC of Monroe County
  • Home Depot
