Mary Steichen Calderone (MD), a sex education pioneer, has been inducted in the 1998 National Women's Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame, in Seneca Falls, N.Y., will take part in the celebrations in 1998 for the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Women's Rights.

Robert L. Brent '48, '53M (MD), '55M (PhD), '88 (ScD) (Hnr) writes that he and his wife, Lillian Hoffman Brent '50RC, are keeping very busy. He was chairman of this year's National Council on Radiation and Measurements meeting dedicated to discussion of the reproductive effects of environmental radiation, both before conception and during pregnancy. One of the participants was James V. Neel '39 (PhD), '44M (MD), '74M (ScD) (Hnr). In July, the journal Reproductive Toxicology published a festschrift in his honor. Marshall Lichtman '66M (Res), former dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, represented Rochester at the dedication ceremonies. Brent was honored by Jefferson Medical College with an auditorium bearing both his and his wife's names, and the chair of pediatrics at Jefferson is now called the Robert L. Brent Chair of Pediatrics. The Brents traveled to Sweden in September to dedicate a new department and professorship at the University of Gothenburg; then in October, they attended the annual meeting of the National Academy of Science, where Brent was inducted into the NAS Institute of Medicine. Their November was spent in the South Pacific, where Brent participated in an endowed lecture tour.

C. McCollister Evarts (MD), '64M (Res) was elected to senior membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Evarts is Penn State's senior vice president for health affairs and dean of its College of Medicine, as well as president and chief academic officer of the Penn State Geisinger Health System.

David Turriff M (PhD) president of En Chem, an environmental testing laboratory, was profiled in the Green Bay Press-Gazette last September. Turriff is one of the company's founders and the developer of En Core, a patented soil sampler that has been written into job specifications by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA specifies En Core use for its accuracy and sample purity.

David B. Nash (MD) was named the 1997 individual Health Care Hero by the Philadelphia Business Journal for his contributions toward improving the quality of health care and lowering costs. Nash is associate dean for health policy and director of the Office of Health Policy and Clinical Outcomes at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia. He is known nationally for his work in outcomes management, medical staff development, quality-of-care improvement, and managed care medical education.
