Bruce Landsdale and Elizabeth (Tad) Krihak Lansdale '47 write: "We are just back from six weeks of conducting seminars for NGOs in Nepal and then on to Bali for 'some enchanting evenings.' All great fun, especially touring the jungle forests in southern Nepal by elephant. . . . We came back to Greece with a one-week stop in Albania to help pick up the pieces after the riots and burning at the Agricultural University last March--the whole library was totally destroyed." Tad also mentions that the organization she helped found, the International Women's Organization of Greece, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. The philanthropic organization's aim is to allow women of all nationalities to meet and adjust to

Greek society, using English as the language of communication. The Lansdales say they will be in California until May.

Kenneth M. Cameron's new book, America on Film: Hollywood and History, was published in December 1997. . . . Artist Jeannette Klute was profiled in an article in the Brighton-Pittsford Post. Klute, an internationally known photographer, discussed her transition from photography to painting. . . . Ty Martin received the 1997 Robert G. Albion Award of the National Maritime Historical Society, in recognition of his contributions to the field of naval history. Martin has also been named the 1997 Naval History Author of the Year by the U.S. Naval Institute. His latest work, A Signal Honor, will be available from Tryon Publishing Co. in 1998. . . . Curtis C. Messinger spent a month as a volunteer executive in Kiev, Ukraine, as part of an International Executive Service Corps program that sends retired Americans to assist in the developing world, including Central and Eastern Europe. While in the Ukraine, Messinger assisted the Ukrainian Federation of Professional Accountants and Auditors in conducting seminars on international accounting.

Robert A. Longworth is the owner of the Sierra 5spot Ranch in Mt. Aukum, Calif. He writes that the "5spot" gets its name from a wildflower frequently seen around the ranch. He is a retired consulting construction engineer, formerly with the Nuclear Power Division at GE. Longworth was an Air Force P38 pilot in the 71st Fighter Squad in WWII and has memories of living in a dorm on campus in the summer of 1942 while taking part in a USAAC Glider Training Program.

and his wife, Jan, bought a marina in eastern Tennessee to augment their existing property development business. Martin writes that log home and boat rentals keep him busy and he's lost 41 pounds. Nancy Bates Carlman sent a photo of herself and her husband, Stephen, taken on Cape Horn, in Chile, during their 1996 trip. According to Carlman, the albatross monument to sailors seen in the photo was erected in 1992. She writes that they visited Cape Horn and cruised the nearby islands on Darwin Sound, a 71-foot ocean ketch. . . . Edward G. Gibson was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame for his participation in the 1973 space flight. . . . Barbara Malloy Glaze reports that she is now a grandmother, as her daughter recently gave birth to a baby girl. Her son was married in 1997.

Warner C. Blow was included in the Forbes magazine list of the CEO's of the 200 best small companies in America. Blow is CEO of Sterling Commerce located in Barker, N.Y. . . . Gail Paxson Mates reports that she retired as development director of the libraries and Library School at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1995. She then returned to school full-time, receiving her Master of Library Science degree and election into Beta Phi Mu, the international library and information science honor society, in May 1997. Her husband, Robert E. Mates '57, retired as professor of engineering and research professor of medicine at SUNY Buffalo in May 1997. He is completing a three-year term as vice president for communications for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The couple plans to sell their house and buy a motor home, but they will still be reachable by e-mail at matesr@asme.org.

John D. Marciano has a written a new book published by Peter Lang Publishing, Inc. Civic Illiteracy and Education: The Battle for the Hearts and Minds of American Youth presents the thesis that education--often through history text books--promotes civic illiteracy. Marciano is an associate professor at SUNY Cortland, where he teaches courses in the social and historical foundations of education.

Carla Friedenberg Peltonen writes, "Both of my children have graduated from college, which is the greatest thing that's happened to us in a long time! My son graduated from the University of Michigan in 1995, and my daughter graduated from the University of Arizona in 1997. My husband and I still enjoy our life here in the mountains and wouldn't give it up for the world. I have been writing novels with a partner for 20 years now under the pseudonym Lynn Erickson, and we have a new one coming out in the spring of 1998. The new book is called The Eleventh Hour. Its theme is a sober one--the death penalty--particularly in the state of Colorado, where last October, the first person in thirty years was executed by order of it."

Karen Alkalay-Gut '75 (PhD) reported in January that she planned to read her poems at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on March 12. Jazz pianist Liz Magnes and two other poets who write in Arabic and Hebrew, Naim Araidi and Rony Somek, respectively, were also scheduled to perform . . . . Marc Holzer is professor of public administration at Rutgers University­Newark Campus, where he directs the National Center for Public Productivity and the Ph.D. program in public administration. His latest book, Government at Work, was published by Sage Publications in January. His wife, Madeleine Fuchs Holzer '69, is the arts in education director for the New York State Council on the Arts. They live in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. Their son Matthew, a graduate of Brown University, teaches at the high school level in New York City. Their son Benjamin is a sophomore at Brown.

Nathaniel (Neal) Beck writes that he is still a professor in the political science department at the University of California at San Diego. His daughter Rachel graduated from Brown University and now works as the volunteer coordinator at Lazarus House, the largest homeless shelter in Massachusetts. . . . He is credited with many of the design and marketing innovations that have led to the popularity of backpacks as both sports equipment and fashion accessories. . . . James W. Myers '77S (MBA) was named executive vice president and general manager of DynSolutions, a subsidiary of DynCorp, one of the nation's leading information technology service firms. DynSolutions provides object management, document imaging, and work flow solutions to federal government agencies and commercial clients. . . . Adrienne Scheck was the recipient of a 1998 Tribute to Women Award presented by the Maricopa, Ariz., YWCA. This award honors outstanding women in the business and professional community who have worked toward the empowerment of women and the elimination of racism in Maricopa County. Scheck is a molecular biologist at the Barrow Neurological Institute.

Evans ended his second year with Cushman Realty Corp. with the sale of 88 East Broad St. in Columbus, Ohio-- a 20-story office building located across the street from the Ohio State Capitol Building. Craig was awarded the CCIM designation from the Commercial Real Estate Institute of the National Association of Realtors this past November. Craig's son, James, a student at the Pomfret School, an independent boarding/day school in Connecticut, received early admission to Duke University. His daughters, Natalie and Daphne, attend the Hopkins School in New Haven, Conn., where they are in the ninth and eighth grades, respectively. . . . Richard Katz was profiled in the Suburban West Journal of St. Louis, Mo., when he teamed up with fellow musician, David Halen, concert master and violinist for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, to give several performances of a violin and piano sonata. Katz is both a musician and physician. According to the Journal, Katz is vice president of medical affairs for SSM Rehab, the largest rehabilitation facility in Missouri, as well as associate clinical professor of internal medicine at St. Louis University Medical School. . . . Eric C. Rubenstein joined the law firm of Phillips Nizer Benjamin Krim & Ballon L.L.P. as counsel. He now heads up the real estate practice in the firm's Long Island, N.Y., practice. . . . Elton R. Since September, Andrea Scala has been attending the physician assistant program at Rochester Institute of Technology. . . . After graduation from Case Western Reserve Law School in May, Latha M. Srinivasan takes the bar exam and begins work as an associate at Duvin, Cahn & Hutton, a labor and employment law firm in Cleveland, Ohio. . . . Anne von Kaenel married Harry W. Graham on May 10, 1997. Rochester alumni in the wedding party included Kristen Johnson, Marla Rosenberg, and Melissa Sand Schrader. Anne and Harry live in Newport, R.I., and are expecting a child sometime in 1998. . . . Amy Wiesner attends the College of Naturopathic Medicine at the University of Bridgeport where she'll "finish in four years and graduate with a doctorate in naturopathy."

Beth Brenner (see '95). . . . Ahmed J. Kassim writes, "Hello all! Currently I am working with BASF Corp. in Baton Rouge, La., as a chemical engineer. I will be in Louisiana through March, then who knows where they'll send me next. I am planning to go back to school in a year or so to get either a law degree or M.B.A. (or both). I am planning to make a career change very soon, hopefully to something in finance or securities. I would love to hear from any Rochester friends. My e-mail address is kassima@basf-corp.com. She is attending Tulane Law School in New Orleans where she is doing great and having a ball. Katia Kardash '97 is living in NYC and working for Bear Stearns as an analyst. And finally, Shawn Rochester '97 is working as an engineer for International Paper in Lock Haven, Pa.
