Fall Teams Shine

Kelsey Turley SOCCER: Kelsey Turley ’09 earned All-Region honors for helping lead the Yellowjackets as they advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

The football team made its first postseason appearance in nearly two decades, the women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, and field hockey posted a single-season record for wins as well as the program’s first All-Americans.

In addition, Susan Johnson ’07 put the finishing touches on an outstanding Rochester volleyball career.

All in all, the fall 2006 season proved to be an extremely successful one for Rochester’s sports teams.

Football: Led by first-year head coach Scott Greene, the Yellowjackets qualified for the ECAC Northwest championship, their first postseason game in 19 years. With a season record of 7–4, including a five-game winning streak, Rochester finished third in the Liberty League.

Women’s soccer: In legendary coach Terry Gurnett’s 30th year, the Yellowjackets earned a trip to the NCAA Division III tournament for the 15th time, advancing to the Sweet 16. Rochester posted a 16–2–3 overall record, and its UAA mark of 5–1–1 placed the squad second in the association.

Men’s soccer: Rochester posted a 9–6–3 record and qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the second year in a row, making it to the second round.

Men’s cross-country: As a team, the Yellowjackets placed third at the New York State championships. Rochester was led throughout the season by Mark Stevens ’08, who won the program’s first individual UAA title since 1997. Stevens placed 18th at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals, qualifying for the national championships. After an injury forced Stevens to withdraw, teammate Patrick Hughes ’08 went in his stead, placing in the top half of the field.

Women’s cross-country: Rochester finished 13th out of 30 teams at the NCAA Atlantic Regional championships, led by Kellie Hasselwander ’08 in 55th place.

Field hockey: The team set a team single-season record for wins with 13, against just seven losses, the most successful season in the program’s history. The squad advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Regionals. Midfielder Celinda Fletcher ’07 and goaltender Rachel Cahan ’08 became Rochester’s first field hockey All-Americans when they earned second-team accolades.

Women’s volleyball: Outside hitter Susan Johnson ’07 capped a stellar Rochester career as the program’s all-time leader in digs and kills. She also earned a slew of accolades, including honorable mention Division III All-America, first-team All-New York Region, New York State Co-Offensive Player of the Year, first-team All-New York State, and second-team All-UAA. As a team, the Yellowjackets won their second consecutive ECAC Upstate New York championship, and they placed seventh at both the UAA championships and the New York State championships.
