Rochester breakthrough earns Nobel PrizeGérard Mourou, left, and Donna Strickland ’89 (PhD), right, will share half of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for their work to develop lasers as a high-powered tool. Their research at the Laser Lab in the 1980s ultimately opened the door to new medical, scientific, and commercial applications such as Lasik eye surgery and the manufacturing of materials used in cell phones. Additionally, former economics professor Paul Romer was named a recipient of this year’s Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Happy 70th birthday, WRURThe radio station that began on a small corner of the University of Rochester’s River Campus, in the basement of Burton Hall, is now 70 years old. What might be said about radio in general could also be said about WRUR: it has shown remarkable persistence. It survived the rise of television, thrived in the age of the VCR, and found new life in the 21st century, as first the internet, and then social media, threatened its eclipse. Rock on. Alumni profile: Kaveh Rastegar ’01E Kaveh Rastegar ’01E, songwriter and master of the upright and the electric bass, has played on countless recordings, performed with hundreds of musicians, and written or cowritten songs for top artists such as John Legend. He is also one of the founders of the popular Eastman-originated band, Kneebody. Public memorial service planned for Paul BurgettPaul Burgett was University dean, vice president, ambassador, and one of our community’s most recognized citizens. The University is planning a public memorial service to honor him at 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 13 in Strong Auditorium on the River Campus. The service will be streamed live. Richard Handler named new Board of Trustees chair The University’s Board of Trustees elected Richard B. Handler ’83, CEO and director of the Jefferies Financial Group, as Board chair at its October meeting. Handler, a trustee since 2005, serves on the Board’s Executive and Advancement Committees and has been chair of the Board’s Investment Committee since 2007. He is also committed to the Alan and Jane Handler Scholars program, a scholarship he designed at the University for undergraduates of diverse backgrounds, exceptional academic and leadership potential, and high financial need. Handler succeeds Danny Wegman. Presidential search update The Trustees’ Presidential Search Committee has posted the complete position description for University President on the Presidential Search website. The description was created with input from numerous stakeholder meetings; Town Halls with faculty, staff, and students; and a University-wide survey. Use the online feedback form at Rochester.edu/presidential-search to provide additional input or submit nominations.
